Well after waiting for more then a few years for this I finally got to see it last night and I wasn't disappointed. It isn't true to the book sadly but as a cinematic experience it is first class. I can see why it has been dragged out to three films though with several scenes installed that are not in the book and a few scenes that are merely touched upon in the book fully padded out to the extreme.
Peter Jackson has done it again though, it is a fantastic movie albeit at 3 hours long it is a bit of an endurance. Is it just me but are three hour films just a bit on the far side of comfortable? I'd like a 15 min comfort break in the middle, maybe it is just my age though :D
I'll be interested to see other folks impressions on the film but overall I'd give it 9/10.

48 or 24fps? If 48fps, is it any different?

I'm a LOTR fan and am looking forward to this film, BUT it's had mixed reviews and at 3 hrs I may wait until its available on DVD/torrent

I saw it normal, haven't tried a 3d film yet. Don't wait for the torrent, go see it, some films deserve the full experience, this is one of them.

It's THREE films? Dang! Won't be going to the cinema 3 times so that's ruled that out.

3hrs sounds ideal to me, I like to be entertained... and they should ban 90 min movies.

In three years you won't go to the cinema 3 times?

Thought it was excellent but really is just teeing up for the real action to get going. Loved it. Like the last films I reckon the gap between each is going to be an annoyance.

Not a film which floats my boat, for some reason I just cannot work out, I don't fancy it, I enjyed the LOTR trilogy but this, nah not this time .

Are the added 'extras' in line with parts from the silmarrilion/children of hurin or just added extras for the sake of making a nine hour series?? I hope they have took parts of the silmarrilion as that fascinated me, however does get complex.

There are six versions, 2d, 3d and IMAX, in either 24 or 48 fps. Wow. Are we really ready for this. Do we care?

They have combined various bits of the appendixes (?) of lotr with the hobbit to make three stupidly long films. Did it need this? Probably not. Could they not have done two films, with an insanely long directors cut DVD?

Is it a money printing exercise?

Will I go to see it? No.

I'm not a fan of cinema anyway. It's always out of focus, too loud, and not at a convenient time. Also, in a three hour film, I want a loo break. And beer. Lots of.

Don't get hung up with the hype surrounding the use of high frame rates...

Just seen Gandalf himself spewing the usual rubbish re this on the Andrew Marr show...

High frame rates have been touted around for years [was called MaxiVision or something like that when I first encountered it 30 or so years ago]... Its a studio con to try and have you believe your getting something extra for your money... All they needed to do is shoot on 'real film' using a fine grain stock and not manipulate the image in the lab to take the 'edge' of it...

OK so planning a trip to see it... but.... 2D or 3D? I can't decide. I'm not a huge fan of 3D but feel I might be missing something if I go for 2D. Any thoughts from those who've seen it?

I saw it last night in 3D, I was not disappointed in it, the 3D was only 1 pound more so It was worth paying that. There are some very good moments in 3D , but there are also a fair few that you will think why did I bother with the glasses.

The film it self I really enjoyed , there will be people who will say it was boring at times and not enough action, I thought the action was spot on and from reading the book, the first part of the meet does take ages but you need this to get to know the characters.

I can't wait until the next one is out and I will go and watch that in 3D as well.

I thought LOTR was ok but nothing more because IMO the books were far better than the cinematic adaptation. Plus any film that has Orlando bland in it isn'treally worth watching.

Will I go and see The Hobbit? No don't think I'll bother especially from all reviews I've read and heard including this thread show it doesn't stick true to the book. Can't see what reason Jackson had for creating another 9hour, 3 part saga other than rinsing the cinema going public. I'll wait till it comes onto sky movies and even then not sure I'll bother

I'll go see - though The Hobbit is actually more of a kids/teens book (when teens were teens). As I've read the (pretty short) book fairly recently I can see myself getting a bit impatient and thinking 'well that's padding'; 'that's not in the book' etc)

So I saw it this afternoon; in 3D.

I thought it was OK and seemed to capture the spirit of the book reasonably well. That is to say it's a children's film although those of us who enjoyed Tolkien in our youth will still enjoy it. I haven't read the book since childhood and had a few nostalgic chuckles at certain things.

Might be the last 3D film I see though - I don't think it added anything to the experience at all.

I saw it this evening, not sure about it to be honest, it followed the story pretty well and I did enjoy that, but there was too much extra stuff added. I still think it would have been better to do in 1 one or maybe at a push 2 films

Saw this yesterday in HFR 3D...it's brilliant! Loved it, was sceptic all because I'm a LOTR geek but was very pleased.

HFR 3D is freaking epic! Could have sworn we were the watching them on some scenes, but at £11.95 a seat, it's expensive! Luckily we had a gift voucher :)
