My son plays golf twice or maybe 3 times a year. He is Chief Football Writer for a national daily and is at present at the Grove where the England team are staying. Tomorrow the Journos are playing golf at the Grove with the England players.

Can any forummers with experience of the Grove give me any tips at all to pass on to him - at the moment his buttocks are firmly clenched.

What a great opportunity - once the first tee shot is out of the way, I bet he'll enjoy the day.

Tell him not to wager too much money, as footballers are known for being bandits. ;)

Have a nice time, that's the best advice. It is a very nice golf course, and if he can't enjoy playing there, there's no hope for him. It'll be in great Knick, it always is.

The rough can be a bit penal, but they have a local rule about dropping out if you can't find your ball, as it keeps play moving.

It's a nice course and as the other guys say, is only tough if you're in the very penal rough. I like the place, my only criticism being the bar prices. I don't mind spending money but £6.50 for a pint of orange juice is a little steep!

How did it go for your son, Rosecott? I saw that Gary Neville tweeted a pic of a trophy yesterday. :fore:

I just received a link to a Mail Online page - extract:

"Meanwhile, England newcomer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, 18, is already confident enough around the camp to jokingly make his objections known when the man from The Guardian, masquerading as a 28-handicapper, pipped the Arsenal player for the individual prize by shooting 91 for a net 63 at the FA's golf day for the media and sponsors."

Naturally, I have disowned him.
