I went to the range last night and started off pretty well, hitting the shape of so I wanted to, but then, as I do on the course too, my tempo seems to go and I g back to my old issue of swinging too hard/fast/rushed on the backswing which then leads t the same on the downswing.

So how do other people control their tempo or avoid the issue of rushing the backswing?

This is going to sound daft, but make sure you aren't rushing your pre shot routine (if you have one). If you buzz about at 100mph in everything you do it gets you in a 'fast' mindset and you'll rush the swing.

If you can't slow yourself down, walk up to the ball really slowly, almost slow motion. It really works.

I have this same problem on the range and will on the odd occasion I get a chance to go on the range limit the amount of balls I hit. I am usually better on the course unless I lose my temper, usually caused by bad luck (most notably loosing a ball that lands on or just off fairway. Happened to me twice in the last few weeks)

Everyone has a different tempo.
So to try and slow down when you want to swing fast isn't going to work for any length of time.
Rather than trying to swing slowly, think 'swing smoothly'.

Count in your head, 1-2-3. I have the same issue and when the tempo goes I do this. You can use a phrase if you prefer but counting is nice and simple.

Was told once to say

Severiano Ballesteros

During your swing to have a nice tempo

Think that's against the rules

Did cross my mind too when I saw it but never got round to checking it... off to R&A site......

edit: not finding anything to say you cant (& a weird logic says why not, after all I could just as easy write it on the ball)
anyway don't want to take the fellas thread off topic so I'll post in Rules section

I had a poor round on Tuesday, because I had changed a few things in my set up and was worrying about them rather than tempo. Hence my swing (as usual) got too fast for its own good. Slowed it down a bit the next day and played really well. :)

I've got the tour tempo app on my phone and do a lot of work with it to slow the tempo down especially on the range when I can get a bit quick if I hit too many balls or it isn't going so well

with all due respect homer, My advice (yes I know you dont want it) would be to get back to basics, dump all the snake oil potions and you'll see a marked and quick improvement- you might even enjoy it!

My old teacher suggested using 'Sev-riano Balles-teros' as a tempo thought. Mine was more like my boss's name (Ian Spence) at the time! And yes, I know there's an 'e' missing, but it was 'silent' anyway.

Some good suggestions, like it. Region3 I like the suggestion of slowing everything down, will give that a try. Might couple it with the "Severiano Ballesteros" suggestion too!!

If you want to reset your tempo, try hitting drivers with a full swing a 100 ish yards. It's nigh on impossible, but it takes all of the trashing tendencies out of your swing. The other thing to concentrate on is the strike. I am a believer that good tempo comes from a quality strike, as soon as you are hitting it well, you swing much easier, not the other way round.

With the Seve thing, in case it isn't obvious, Severiano is the backswing, then you hit the ball on the T in BallesTeros. Not only does it stop you rushing the backswing, it should also stop you going full pelt from the top on the way down.

Just think of the feeling of pushing a child on a swing. You dont jerk it back and through, you let the swing come to its high point and as it starts back to add your input. Make it your last thought at you get into setup and thats usually enough.

And with equal respect, it's hardly snake oil potion. Stick the headphones on, get the app on the right speed and swing to the beat. In fairness it is actually hard to make sure you wait and don't pre-empt the beats
