All I see in this complaint is a bit of superiority complex as well as grumpyness Im sorry to say.

Why not speak to them at the 1st tee?
Why not at the 2nd?
Were you advised to tee off on the 6th by staff or is the club so laid back they allow anyone to tee off anywhere whenever they feel like it or is it normal members practice to do so?
As I read through your complaint I detected more of an afront at the way they presented themselves as lesser mortals rather than as bad golfers with pooor etiquette. And finally for any golfer to tee up when people are withing range without warning and simply as a means of putting pressure on them I find one the most offensive and provocative forms of abuse of the rules of play and etiquette there is and not what I would ever consider the actions of a laid back golfer. I think that if you had taken the time to read my post and indeed my reply to PJ you would have answered some of the questions in your own reply....As for speaking to them on the 2nd they had already tee'd off and were half way to the hole when myself and my playing partner had reached the tee box.....And as i said earlier i tee'd it up to put pressure on (not strike the shot) as the trio in question were faffinf with a ball retriever instead of chipping onto the green and finishing the hole.

I see your point but it didnt read like this in the OP. There were two occasions where I believe if it meant that much over the next 5 holes you had chances to chat to these people and indeed ask them how they got on the course as scruffy as you describe. I did'nt read the post wrong, perhaps you may have written it wrongly. The only thing I got wrong was assuming the frustration shown in the words was reflected in the Tee up remark which I wrongly took as teeing off. But I forgive myself for that one having seen the same thing written and heard it said so many times in conversation where they mean hitting the ball but i apologise for that but not the rest based on the OP.

I have never been able to comprehend how the material of a golfers pants can be relevant!

Traditions and values I beleive and agree with. Just like football teams wear kits, golfers should also dress accordingly.

Let's not aspire to be like football. It's all about a players behaviour not what he wears.

And thats exactly what the clothing represents, the behaviour. If a player is courtious(sp) enough to respect the dress code before he turns up, he is more likely to follow the rules when he turns up.

I think its mostly a security blanket for most clubs. People who want to just turn up and whack a few balls about and care little for anyone else or the course, will most probably not go to the trouble of dressing in the correct attire. SO when they turn up at private clubs pros can turn them away.

Most of the time if you look like you know what your doing, you probably do.

Your REPLY may say this YOUR OP does not, it simply says that you teed off on the 6th because of a back up on the 1st and ice, dont make an OP if later you intend to change it, most people read the OP and reply or comment on it not the exchanges thereafter.It does not state that you obtained permission to do so, nor does it say a local rule allows this so before you like so many here jump on the ridicule train for a free ride I suggest you re read it yourself. Tell me the sentance it says that you got permission, tell me the ssentance where you indicate it is an accepted rule or activity. I await your indulgeance as I replied to the OP not a correction of it If it didnt need correction or addition then it would be a more valid OP wouldnt it?

Ok Herbie let me make it easier for you to understand.
1. I have a problem with dress if its outside the course rules...i.e team sports jerseys, jeans, no track pants and no pants tucked into socks.
2. I have a problem with so called players that if they want to play a particular game they at least educate themselves in the basics of said sport.....
3. If all they wanted was to knock a ball about go to a driving range or a pitch and putt course.
But at least have the cop on to know and ask about local rules before you book your tee time.

A person with real charactor and qualities is someone who has them no matter what they wear, people who see quality of appearence as a measure of a man or womans charactor over and above the person will forever live in a warped mirror and never really see the true image. Most people with real quality would dress decently anyway without the need to harp on about it or anyone elses dress.

Here is a list of a few typically scruffy people who would be frowned upon or not allowed to play at some clubs.

Picasso
Davinci
Stephen king

I could make this a very big list...

Then again I think the mirror club would put the rose tinters on should anyone like these turn up for a game.

What people wear has its importance and limits in society but it is overwhealmingly pompus and pretencious at a lot of golf clubs Ive played at.

Then why would you get involved in a discussion with Homer and I, if all you were doing is replying to the OP.....At least have the decency to read the other replies....And the topic that you are trying to highlight has been clarified in my reply so why go on about the issue.

I can see the point brain/herb but the way I see it is....

There are two types of golfers.

A)Golfers
B)Pitch and putters.

Golfers, weather they play at a muni, pay and play private courses or belong to clubs generally follow the dress codes, follow the rules (as they know them) and will respect the course, facilities and other members, players. Even though most private clubs say they require handicaps to play, they generally dont and make an assumption based on how the players present themselves when they arrive at the club. (based on attire, behaviour, first impressions)

Pitch and putter's watch the golf on the tv in the summer, decide the fancy a game, ususally share a bag of clubs or borrow a mates, turn up in jeans, t-shirt and reebok classics, pack a few beers in the bag and hack around as they please with no regard for anyone else.

Now of course this is not strictly true but its all about keeping standards so the other members/players out there are not subject to the unnaceptable (moaned about on here) behaviour.
