normally for a drive i tee the ball up really high , however the other day started teeing the ball up approx 50% lower the results were amazing long straight , does anyone else do this ?
also on par 3s when taking an iron do you tee the ball up or hit of the ground ?

My tee is quite low. I would say only 30-40 percent above the driver when placed next to it. Ive read it should be half but i am amazed at how high some people tee it up. I pay with one guy that when he addresses the ball his driver is completely below the ball. He seems to connect ok though. Depends on what you are used to.

I always tee up on a par 3. Even if it was a 120 yard pitching wedge

Yes, I tee it up lower than really high :D ;)

I always use a tee, even with a wedge, even if it's just to sit the ball at the level of the grass.

Since getting my R11 I have started teeing the ball higher.

I use the grey castle tee and before I used to use the pink ones.

It is set on 8 degrees right enough.

When I took my new driver out (8 days ago) I teed it on pink the whole way round. All the marks (from the permanent marker) were spot on the middle of the face (vertical). Lovely.

On the 16th, I put it on a high tee (with a wooden one) with the idea of lashing a monster fade. It came right out the top of the face, came down with snow on it and went about 175 yards.....grim..... :o

As for par 3s, on the short ones, I just go for a perfect lie-type height, maybe 5 mm. With a mid iron or fairway/hybrid, probably a little more.

I use a blue castle for 3 wood. According to gamola golf
http://www.gamolagolf.co.uk/acatalog/Graduated_Castle_Tees.html
they are 17mm. No wonder I sky a few.... :o

I agree with this. It surprises me that some players (not naming) I know, just drop a ball down and hit it. That's ok, I suppose, to a degree but watching the scratch team boys, they tend to use the broken end of a wooden tee pushed right in. I reckon they get a mm or so, but it seems to work. You've got to be very confident, then again, if you hit it perfect, you hit it perfect. (but they don't!!)

I think you'll find it a lot easier to fade the ball if you tee it lower with the driver Dave.

Not as high as most with the driver compared to most of my playing partners.

Always on par 3's but normally pushed right into the ground but gives you the "perfect" lie.

Then on days like today I could have had a high class hooker presenting the ball between her funbags and I wouldn't have fared any worse!

LOL. :) Even my partner questioned the idea. I was trying for height as well.

D- schoolboy error. I admit it. :)

Set my R9 up for slight draw, shaft and weight then tee ball up about 1 1/2 inches and let her rip.

Off left heel fairly straight, inch in front power fade, inch behind soft draw. just use same grip and swing , seems to work ok.

Par 3's up tee into give perfect lie

I'm struggling to hit my irons from tight lies at the moment, much prefer the fluffiness of the first cut if I've got a choice. So on par 3's I tend to tee the ball up higher than usual and take one more club than I need. This negates the reduced loft that teeing the ball up higher will produce and promotes a better strike (in my case).
I feel a lot happier doing it this way. It's whatever works for you.
Thinking of going over to pink tees with my driver to promote a more consistent strike. I generally get it right with my wooden tees but sometimes get it wrong, leading to a skied one every now and then. It's the odd wrong one that I'm trying to take out of the equation.

I spent years just hitting it off the ground on short par 3's but now i just grab a broken one and tee it very low. Like others have said, the tee is the only place you get a preferred lie so use it to your advantage, might as well.

With the driver i tee it about 1.75-2", seems to work well for me although it took me months to get it right as it seemed ridiculously high to me. But if you think about it, you're not going to skim the ground with the club head precisely so the position at address is not the striking position (ie striking position is higher). When you look at the size of driver heads now you could probably get away with 2.5-3" if you wanted to

Never tee the ball up for irons. What's the point, all your other ones are hit off the deck, so do the same on a tee. I would mention that you do need good tees, with grass on them. Bare sandy tees, :(
