Teeing off with irons

just a question as i was unsure.

when teeing off, if you are using an iron, do you have to use a tee or can you put the ball down on the tee as if it was a fairway shot?

anything you want, you can place it down or put it on a tee, but i think putting it on a tee is better.

You don't have to use a tee, but the majority of handicap golfers are disadvantaging themselves if they don't. Laura Davies doesn't use a peg on par-3's, but she is no ordinary handicap golfer.
Oh and by the way, if you don't use a tee and take a huge divot, make sure that the Chairman of the Greens Committee is out of sight.

You can hit it off the deck but why make it harder. Some of our par 3's are over 200 yards and I don't recommend trying to hit 3 or 5 woods off the turf just because you have the option. The game is hard enough so I make sure I tee it up every time.

Yep. Read rule 11-1. Can be off a tee, or from the ground - including from an irregularity in the ground, regardless of whether the irregularity was made by the player

Like most others, I just don't see the need to hit it directly off the deck. I tee mine up a few mm, just enough to sit level with the grass.

Im a 50/50 man myself, if the teeing area is worn or very uneven I will use a tee but if its lush, I see it as being slightly better lie than the middle of the fairway so I will very often take it off the lawn.

But in answer to the question, yes you can, and yes you can, unless local rule prevents.

As for taking divots, its what your irons are also designed for, if you have a good greenkeeper and membership making the effort to fill divots with sand/seed mix provided it is no problem at all.

Longer par 3's will always see me using a tee peg.
But shorter holes or tees with a nice piece of lush grass will see me taking the ball off the deck.

Many of ours can't even repair pitch marks on the green, and divots on the course, so the chance of getting them to fill divots on the tee with sand/seed is very slim. And don't get me started on societies!!

I have been a member at such a club, I bet the offenders were the biggest moaners about such things too, well they were at the club I once belonged to. Didnt half get upset at AGM once when such a person got up to bang on about the state of the course and golfers neglecting the things you mentioned, and I stood up and pointed out how often I had seen this person do the neglecting in one round....wooo hooo fireworks...

I would say with long irons use a low tee every time - why miss the chance to get a perfect lie ?

With shorter irons it would depend on the shot you are trying to play but I would use a tee about 75% of the time

Dont worry, it was at a club I was leaving but my honesty has always got me into more trouble than I remember. Who the hell said honesty is the best policy??
