A player has a habit of putting the tee peg in their mouth just before they hit a putt. This just seems like it's an unusual habit, but then I thought there could be a reason behind it, such as a way of pointing peg at ball to try and keep head still. So, question is is this allowed or is it using equipment in an unusual way?

Can’t imagine it helps with alignment in any way, probably just a comfort thing. Though if he’s really biting down on it then it may help with tension in some way and help remove tension from the hands/arms

The reason I wondered was that, there is a putting drill that requires you to put a tee peg in your mouth and point it at the ball. It helps to keep your head from moving through impact apparently. I didn't think you could then go and do that in a competition.

If he’s using it for that reason then it’s an aid.
But you would have difficulty proving it.
What about chewing gum to concentrate, tee in butt of club?

What I would say is you should not putt a tee you have put in the ground in your mouth ,some chemicals and rats pee are very dangerous.
Same for licking your balls. Lol.

He should avoid any sudden intake of breath if his putt narrowly misses the hole.
Agreed Colin, years ago i nearly choked when a tee i was biting on lodged in my throat when i sneezed.
Luckily my PP thumped me on the back a few times to remove it, never again, i can be very dangerous.
