Just had a meeting with the UK TM guys and went through product as I couldn’t go the US this week
know there was a lot of discussion on shafts options for the M1 driver - the definitive answer is there are 3 stock Aldila Rogue, Fujikura 60 and Kuro Kage Silver and in total 23 available with NO upcharge on the RRP of £429 (TM expect it to retail at £419 initially) -
they are genuine aftermarket shafts not 'made for' or whatever. Below the list
have to say it all looked very interesting - really like the look of the rescue. Will post a few pics on twitter later

M1?

I'm a big fan of the no upcharge approach, however, £400 is an awful lot of money for a driver...

Re: TaylorMade R1 - shaft info... hot off the press

£400+ for a driver? You've got to be kidding. That's more than 50% of my annual subs right there. Bonkers.

Eeeek, I am prepped to spend £5/6/700 on a driver.... Special treat though.... :o

No upcharge seems to be the new way forward, make sense when the keep advocating custom fitting.

Re: TaylorMade R1 - shaft info... hot off the press

No up charge is great provided that whoever your buying from keeps a stock of the 20+ shafts they tell you are available... Most will not, some may have the 3. So in many cases you will be paying for the fitting to get your no up charge shaft. Anyhow, bottom line is good for them!

Means you'll be more inclined to go to their specialist fitting centre to try out the full range of shafts but in the process rule out all other brands.

The no upcharge route pays for itself I believe.

Agreed

Good quality shafts in retail versions has been a TM weakness previously, the TP versions were basically retail heads with better quality or real shafts. This is a nice range of shafts, with Rogue and Kuro Kage in various varieties, and the Speeders and Matrix as well. The 757 is a great classic shaft recently updated. Even if you choose a regular flex, the price is still pretty stiff, though, and some other brands use some of these at a lower price point. Will be interesting to see how the market responds.

Yep, there is a bit of a game at foot though when we use phrase "non made for" and "real deal" as for example the real deal Mitsubishi Diamana shafts where made for mass production anyway. So its a real deal made for mass productions shaft.... I am sure this is not the only example.

Further complicated by the fact that the term 'made for' covers everything from rubbish shafts with a paint job to look like a name brand up to effectively aftermarket shafts tweaked to better fit with a certain head. TM retail clubs are closer to the former, Mizuno to the latter. Titrleist is somewhere in the middle, their Diamans are pretty good and the Rogues are also close to the real thing. With shafts like Diamana you can sometimes tell, as there is a naming convention used by some club manufacturers, e.g. aftermarkets have shaft weights ending in 5, made for ending in 0. The Fubuki used in a recent Mizuno driver was an example of one considered by many to be an improvement on the base real shaft.

You obviously never bought a Callaway ERC for £499 back in 2000 of whenever it was that I did!

While £429 is a punchy RRP to market a driver at I do think golfers have become very used to getting a lot of technology for, relatively, not a lot of money

and as we all know over time retail prices do come down

Ye, I read a whole thing mygolfspy on golf equipment v other things we spend money on over the years. Golf clubs have not changed price particularly in many many years. They actually speculated that they would have to get more expensive sooner or later with people leaving the sport and all the damage done by the likes of Callaway and TM with the big box US retailers. They did mention the Callaway ERC or original Big Bertha in the article at £499. That was real money at the time...

Edit: Dan251.... Looks like we were posting at the same time....

It's 33% more than my subs so paying more for a single club than a year's golf isn't new for me. Not that I'll be splashing out that amount on a driver mind you

And what do they think might happen if they do that lol

Re: TaylorMade R1 - shaft info... hot off the press

Ludicrous money.
Especially considering that a new driver is going to make absolutely zero difference if you're not swinging it well.

Its been some time since I read the article but I think there is a bit in it about how much more we pay for a cup of coffee now compared with when the Callaway BB came out.... its all speculation though. Mygolfspy cant know what plans the manufactures have.
