TaylorMade M1 - shaft info... hot off the press

£400+ notes for a driver is utter madness, where does it stop though?

I'm sure they won't struggle selling them though.

Day will have got any distance increase through the decrease in clubhead weight given he has the motion & control to deal with the overall lighter weight - depends how folks can control a lighter feeling head & overall weight if they get any noticeable benefit - only ways to know is to give it a good go - but a controlled go on a LM so folks get the facts as opposed to just a feel of what the results are - but doing it not trying to beat the LM numbers

most graphite shafts are produced for the shaft OEM's by just a few big manufacturers like Mitsubushi who make for a large bunch of OEM's out the one super large factory to whatever compound spec design each OEM shaft companies have developed - except for a very small handful of shaft makers who make their own

majority shafts come out of a few large factories in Taiwan & Japan, a few smaller shaft manufacturers over here

Re: TaylorMade R1 - shaft info... hot off the press

Excellent from TM to give punters as many options as possible with no charge for these different shafts. Might have to change my perception of previous TM driver incarnations and have a play when Silvermere do their demo days

Have you seen the price?
Imagine if they were also charging to upgrade the shaft.

TBH i can't see them shifting that much, it may be the best driver in the world or not but at that price the average golfer will not pay out for.
Taylormade as a company are in trouble, if this is supposed to resurrect them then I'd be worried if I worked for them.
I predict Ping and Callaway will continue to outsell them easily. Shame as I do like Taylormade

If TM has sales matching Ping then they really would be in trouble!

A lot of money compared with a lot of good off the shelf clubs, however a typical custom fit will be around £350-£450 depending on shaft with most of TM's rivals.

Looks like a shift in TM's strategy, tailored (excuse the pun) fit then M1. Off the shelf then Aero Burner or it's no doubt due soon replacement.

Cant see me wanting one of these if the clubhead is lighter, thats the last thing I need!!! How much lighter than the SLDR/R15 is it?

was really just speaking to a minor weight difference making a difference to Tour Pro's (Day) ability to generate little ways more CHS - wouldn't let that put you off giving it a go if you are contemplating it

have hit both M1 & R15 back to back both with same shaft (Mitsubishi Rayon's Kuro Kage Silver TiNi 60 X)
speaking from personal feel both just holding & swinging - it did feel lighter

the CF crown in the M1 alone weighs in at 10g
which is approx 12g less than the titanium crown in the R15 - but most of that weight saving as been re-distrubuted back in the construction of the sole, weight tracks, sliding weights

so although haven't weighed M1 to R15, the weight
different overall will be minimal - but using back to back I could feel a difference, difference in swing speed for me was on average a consistent 3mph
(for every +1mph with optimum launch conditions you can see a gain of +3yds)

Thanks for such a detailed response

Tend to prefer a heavy feeling clubhead (so I can feel where it is all through the swing), happy with the SLDR for now but cant see me swapping for anything that feels lighter for sure, no doubt Ill give it a whack at some point tho

The price will mean that only really good drivers of the ball will commit to buying one of these unless you actually get a big improvement. I think my technique will have to improve dramatically before I can justify the outlay.

Agreed but as MikeH implies, there are numerous options there without a surcharge. However as others have commented £400+ is a big whack. It would need to give me some big changes to my numbers and I'd still want to see it against the Titleist D2 I tried at Silvermere with GM earlier this year and which would be my option of choice at the moment
