I went for a drink at the clubhouse of a club in Surrey where I'm going to play with some friends this coming Sunday. One of my mates has a small tattoo (wife's name) on his forearm. While we were paying the corporate fee for our group the local pro said "on Sunday please wear long sleeves or cover it with a bandaid please".

I've never seen a tour pro with tattoos like footballers so I guess tattoos are not a golf thing but still I found it weird...

Has it happened to anyone else?

Btw, the guy is a doctor and has an annoingly posh accent so it wasn't like bob the builder at the royal wedding.

I have a full sleeve tattoo on my right arm. I have never been asked to cover it at the course and wouldn't even if asked.

I have played rounds with the club sec' and chairman in recent months and they had no objection to it.

If someone were to ask me to wear a long sleeved shirt top cover it I would ask where, in our club rules/etiquette book, it states I have to, becuase it doesn't I've checked.

Tattoos still have a bit of a social stigma sttached to them I'm affraid.

Never heard of this problem before. I have a couple on the top of my arms which are only visible when the sleeves on my t-shirt come up. Am planning getting a new one in the New Year on the bottom of my arm but certainly wont be hiding it on hot/warm days.

played Turnberry and my partner had tatoos on his neck, arms and a diamond earing (no it wasn't cpt Jack Sparrow), no-one said a word but I suppose all they want is their £155 green fee, like most of the big commercial course ie Gleneagles advertise you dont need a handicap cert OR h/cap to play there

A few do have them.

Also, you don't know how many have them in places you can't see when they play golf. Its not like other sports where players often wear shorts and vests or remove tops.

There is one guy that particularly springs to mind. A Scandinavian pro I have seen on the Euro tour who has very prominent tribal designs on his upper arms. I will see if I can remember his name.

In fact, just remembered, Seve had a tattoo of his logo on his wrist!

Edit:
I just keep remembering more pros have tattoos, plus Seves was upper forearm, not wrist.

John Daly has a few.
Annika Sorenstam has one on her lower back.
Rocco Mediate has his sons names on his arm.

Apparently Tiger has a tattoo too, no idea what or where though.

That is very wierd to ask him to cover up. Especially if it's not written down anyway stating that they have to be covered up.

The only place I've been recently where tattoos are frowned upon are nightclubs in Belfast. I remember when most nightclubs wouldn't let you in showing them but they seem to be part of popular culture now so nobody minds.

The dress code section of their club book states the usual requirements but also adds that they reserve the right to not allow access to the course if clothes or accessories are deemed not suitable.

Having said so, problem is that golf is still considered a middle-upper class game, particularly in clubs and tattoos are still considered working class.

That's a really interesting point. I watch a lot of golf, and can't remember seeing a tour pro with any tattoos.

I have tattoos down the inside of both of my arms and on my biceps, and to be honest although I have never been stopped on the course, I have felt a little self conscious they are noticeable particularly when I am putting.

Absolutely disgusted!!!

I don't have any but that is as bad as sexism or racism to me. We don't like what your are but we will take your money if you cover it up.

F*****G JOKE!! Surrey To$$ers!

I am actually raging!! I am so poor at golf yet even after the worst round I don't walk away, then I read about things like this and it makes me really want to!!

I bet i'm poorer at the game than you are :D
on a positive note however I do have a very nice chinese dragon in red and violet covering the whole of my right forearm - if that offends anyone, anywhere, then that really is their problem

Correct! If I was told to cover up a tattoo I'd take my money back and go home.

What would you guys say if I turned up with a 6 inch red mohican with studs all over my face?

PS, I also have a tattoo.

"Can you please sit by my car to scare the kids away from it?"

Seriously. I wouldn't care less. if you have paid your fee's you have as much right to the course as me (Provided you don't infringe any club rules)

I'd ask you if you had the latest Westlife album! :D

Wouldn't give a monkeys as long as you didn't have a chipper!

You've just described my mate Jamie. Plays off of 19 at the moment, absolutely lovely bloke.

Do not judge a book by it's cover.

I've got long hair, tattoos, piercings and a beard that is in desperate need of a trim.

Cheers
