Played yesterday afternoon with three friends at a very windy Cooden Beach Golf Club.
Front 9, I couldn't hit a bloody thing. Scores on the doors at the halfway stage were
RAY 13 POINTS, ALAN 14 POINTS, KHALID 14 POINTS.... ME? 10!! 10 BLOODY POINTS!
Decided I was out of it and teed off the 10th. Long par 5 and the wind was getting stronger.
On the green for two, putting for eagle, walked off with par. 11th long par 4 (SI 1) into the wind. Par in regulation. 12th par 3, 3 putt bogey. 13th par 4, missed 2' birdie chance, par. 14th par 3, 3 putt bogey. 15th par 5, nearly on in two, chip and putt birdie. 16th par 3, three putt bogey. 17th par 4 into wind. Drive and 6 iron to 3', missed putt, regulation par. 18th par 5, put it to 2' for a birdie, missed yet again walked off with par. So despite 4 3 putts (3 of them being par 3's where I wasn't shotting so ended up with only 1 point per hole) I scored 22 points on the back 9 to finish on 32 points. Two of the other lads finished on 31 points and the other on 30!...
Where the hell did that back 9 come from?????

Another case of someone relaxing and forgetting all about the score and just playing golf , we all put too much pressure on ourselves to play well and get too frustrated too quickly imo

smiffy's scoring on the back is a result of determination... or put another way controled anger. This is where anger & anoyance can be useful. But on the other side of this as pointed out we can put too much pressure upon our selves & you could have quite easily have scored 4 points over the back 9 had it not paid off.

Many of us play better when there is not real pressure, but at other times pressure can as I said at the start be good focus.

Its interesting to notice Smiffy that all your buddies played well on the back 9 too, so it seems the guantlet was well & truly thrown down. :D

I did it the other way around!!!!
20 points on the front 9, and 7 points on the back 9.

Know the feeling, I had one of those today, 20 points out, 11 in. Society golf not too sure of it TBH. Only thing I can put it down to was a loss of concentration. Round was far too long, over 4 1/2 hrs and with all the yack about the various team scoring and this counts here and that counts there stuff, sorry not really for me. Very pleasant company but I have to say that I am never at my best in that sort of play. Way I see it I am going to restrict myself to only playing with people off 18 or better, otherwise just too tedious looking for balls wait, wait, wait for my turn to play.On one hole, par 5 watched 10 shots hit from hitting my second to hitting my third. Whatever floats your boat I guess, I am committed to another Society day on Friday but if it goes the same way that will be the last time I will bother.

Smiffy,

Perhaps we are the ultimate 4 ball better ball partnership. Take my +3 gross (22 points) and add in your back nine and job done. Whatever the motivation is is still great scoring especially if you left a couple of extra shots out there. See you Sunday hopefully with your B game!

Really looking forward to it, as is Norman (my playing partner).
I keep trying to get him to register on the site but he's not really into computers as his typing skills leave a bit to be desired!
He's a really nice bloke, plays off 9 and never had a lesson in his life, a "natural" if ever there was one. And like Seve, he is never out of a hole. The number of times I've thought I've got him beat, and he goes and chips in from miles off the green, or cans a 40 footer. Should be a really tight game if we are all firing on four cylinders.
;)
