I'm interested in people's views about when to upgrade to a new set of irons/wedges.

I've been back playing golf regularly for 2 years after a 2 year gap and over the past year have seen my handicap reduce very quickly from 20 to 11.

I have been playing with a great set of Maxfli Revolution Midsize irons for the past 7 years.

Question is if upgrading to a new set now (looking at mx-200/300) would help continue this drop or if waiting till i've hit a lower level consistently before re-evaluating what to go for.

What point triggered this type of decision for other people?

Any help is much appreciated.

It won't make any difference to your handicap, and may in fact send it the other way.

The reason people change?

Lure of the shiny stuff.

I swapped irons this season after a generally below-average performance in 2009. I felt my game wasn't going anywhere fast so I took the risk and changed sets. Thankfully there wasn't much adjustment required and now I'm shooting better than ever.

I suppose it's whatever you feel comfortable with. I now feel as though I can commit to difficult shots without worrying about mistakes - something I honestly could not do with my old set.

I think you need to have specific reasons for the swap and this will unsually (for irons) be the technology improvements or a desire for better quality forged clubs etc. I swapped to Ping G10 from TM 320 last year because a) I'm getting on a bit :D, and more importantly, b) although quite a low handicapper I'm a poor ball striker and need all the help I can get especially with 4/5/6 iron. The pings give me this and I've been much more consistent since getting them.

Thanks.

I'm happy enough with the speed im improving.

I guess im thinking if i can get to a point where i feel i am close to a complete swing and strike i am happy with and am continuously shooting low scores i would think about a custom fit job rather than a set in between.

I'd rather spend every penny necessary later than a bit here, a bit there.

But wait ....... look how shiny  ;)
