After really struggling for all of my golfing career (if that's the word for it) to hit fairways and hybrid clubs with any consistancy I have decided to take them out of the bag. I do not know the reason I cannot hit them, I've had lessons but to no avail, I am either topping the shot or driving the ball into the turf but either way the result is always the same a 10 yrds worm cutter, I have even missed the ball completely on occasion, now that is embarassing.
I do not have the same issue with a long iron, I may not get perfect contact everytime but 7/10 I get an acceptable result. I never top a long iron. I've ordered a 3 iron to replace the 5 wood
Anyone else have the same issues with fairways/hybrids?

Yes, and only recently seemed to have got it sorted. I started playing them with the ball a lot further back in my stance (just in front of centre) and hitting down more into them. The ball is where I would also hit say a 5i from. I recently been hitting a pretty decent 3w off the deck, whereas last year, i would never have considered it.

All the instruction i read said to play them inside my left heel but, my weight transfer is not that great and I ended up hitting toppers.

Hmmmn, I must admit that I have been told to play them off the left heel similar to the driver, I wonder if I could hit it better from the middle of my stance? I'll try it.

Re: Taken out the fiarways for good

I was so bad I even used to play irons off most tees unless the fairway was 2 miles wide and out of bonds was at least two fairways away. The last 6 months has seen a bit of a change though and I'm now hitting fairway woods and my hybrid very consistently, I've even put my old Dunlop 9 wood in the bag and it's been a life saver on a couple of occasions recently. I just make sure I make more of a sweeping action than I use with my irons.

Thinking about it the real reason for the change may have come from desparation when I had an attack of the shanks over winter, a wood or hybrid suddenly seemed to have new attractions...

longest club i have in the big is the 19* hybrid. left the 3 and 5 wood at home. ive put the 4 iron in the bag and contemplating taking a 3 iron out today but its prob not the best idea to try it out in competition.

need to get to the range to work on my 3 wood. i realise im missing a big trick not being able to hit this club well. cut down back swing, move it back it stance slightly and swing smooth. might just take it with me. ive just been playing safe on the par 5's laying up with 4 iron to around 120 yards.

try having the ball just in front of centre,it sounds like your trying to scoop or hit down on the ball.As you know hitting a wood or hybrid of the deck is not like an iron, woods are designed to glide across the surface and not take a divot try swinging with a more relaxed tempo, hope you improve i would be lost without my fairway woods.

Thats a bit weird DB......Thats probably why your thinning them a lot....The club is probably on its way back up when your catching the ball....
My 3 wood is one of the stronger parts of my game.....I can pretty much stick the ball where i point the thing.....

I find what works best for me is to play the ball in line between the left side of your chest and your left ear.....When on a tee have about a 1/3 of the ball above the top of the club.....And keep your hands level with the back of the ball.....After that sweep the club away rather than picking it up steep like an iron......Sweeping it will promote a shallower swing and a shallower return to the ball....

Try hitting them from a tee first for a few months and then start walloping them off the turf.....

When hitting them off the turf ill move the ball a fraction further back to pinch it at impact....
They aren't all that hard to hit pal...Persevere a little longer....

'driving the ball into the turf'

I have done this and thought it had only happened to me! Swung club and the ball did not move forward 1 inch but was almost completely buried! At first i thought that i had launched the ball miles until i noticed a glimmer of white shining through the earth. luckily i was playing on my own :)

im the complete oposite. I would be lost with out my hybrids. My g15 is my go to club when in light rough and ball needs to go a fair tonk same as when on a good lie. I cant hit a long iron for toffee and really struggling with a 3wood at the moment. Next purchase is is replacing benross hybrid with another g15 and tempted to get a really low loft hybrid to replace the 3 wood

Re: Taken out the fiarways for good

I do find it interesting when people post "I can't hit my driver/fairways/hybrids/long irons etc" If you can make a passable swing with the other clubs in the bag there is no reason you can't hit these well as well and in many cases I'm pretty sure a minor set up tweak or two, some playing around with ball position at the range, and some positivity will see huge improvements. I always find the fairways and hybrid a lot easier to hit than a 3 or 4 iron but will still use the 4 iron if the shot dictates and back myself to produce
