I fancy getting a training aid for when I have a little spare time at home but don't have time to go to the range.

I was thinking along the lines of a fixed ball that you hit but was attached to the aid.
All I'd want it to do was show me somehow if the ball would have gone left, right, or straight.

I've seen the one where a ball hangs from what looks like a mini gallows, but I can't see how that would show where the ball would have gone.

Has anyone seen or used anything that sounds remotely like my poor description?

Your description is spot on. It shows where the ball would have gone by whether it swings left, straight or right. What it probably won't show you is what effect any side spin will have. ie. It shows a left flight shot, but is that a pull or a slice? It has it's uses and is quite cheap.

Give me a month!! And get back in touch!

Can't help with sidespin but Smiffy swears by the old tyre drill ( when he was young that's what they used - Henry Cotton taught him )

The modern equivalent is an impact bag - TopFlite do one for under £20.

I can see how it will help, even if not quite what you want.

I had one (may still be in the garden shed), useful when I started to get a basic swing going but really for absolute beginners.

I remember years ago my dad having one of those golf balls on a piece of elastic on the end of an old tent peg (they were all the rage really).and hitting it once and watch it sail over the fence and straight through the windows of a house in the next street along.
