I've had just about the best run of golf I can remember since i took up this stupid game and now it's over, how many of you sometimes wish you had never started? The good times are far and few between and that's probably the reason we keep coming back and trying so hard right? Because when it's good, not much compares. I now my run is over and I'm almost depressed about it! I've stopped trying to fiddle with my swing after reading some stuff about analysis paralysis, any of you guys know what i'm on about? A friend of mine bought this pdf from stage2golf.com and gave it me, i tried it and did help for aabout 2 months but i can't stop myself from thinking about the shot instead of feeling it, it's got alot about the mental part of golf and how we are destined to continue our bad habbits of using our brains to overthink our swings.

My question is, have any of you guys had any success at turning your brains off while swinging golf clubs and do you have a swing thought you use for it, or a swing feeling eve?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I play my best golf with an empty head, but it happens about 2 times a year. The rest of the time I am fighting between my body and my brain. One of them knows best, but the other won't quit.

Welcome to the game of golf.

thanks, if i had taken up any other sport and put as much time into it I'm sure i'd go pro by now :D

Does anyone have s imple swing thought/feeling to start them on the downswing?

I sometimes wish I'd never bothered joining a club, and never bothered getting a handicap, because as soon as I did it set a level in my mind which I feel I ought to be playing too, whereas all I'm doing is getting worse and worse.

Analysis Paralysis...that's spot on for me. I used to be able to hit the ball pretty naturally and consistently, and though I didn't hit far and I nearly always sliced, I could play to those weaknesses.

I find it very hard to switch off and not have ten or twelve swing-thoughts in my head these days, and it's ages since I've felt any sort of natural-swing going on. Just feels awkward now. :(

The only swing thought that I have ever found that works consistantly is the target. You have to feel that your swing is perfect don't question it, and just think about the target.

I have just started to play regularly again in the last few months. My results have improved and I have to agree that the best results come when I concentrate on the target, decide on the club and shot I want to try and then focus on the ball and keeping my head still. Trust the swing and follow through. It's been working for the last month and I see no reason to change.

Keep positive remember the good shots in each round not the poor ones. That way you know you can recall positive memories when deciding on the club and shot again.

I understand you 100% been there done it still doing it, especially if you hit a bad one , you then start having swing thoughts on how you must swing to put it right, by the 4th tee your head is full.

Saw an interview with Paddy harrington and he said that he/pros have one swing thought which they keep for the whole round whereas amateurs constantly change.

Give that a try, just one and use it off every tee.Bob Rottero also swears by the one thought theory.

Personnaly when I address the ball I tell myself to play within myself and then just hit it as relaxed as I can (i.e not on the edge), when I do I find the ball goes straighter and usually further.

Some guys I was playing with on tuesday night were on about Lee Westwood and said that he puts his tongue between his teeth, half sticking it out, when he plays a shot apparently this takes all your tension away (i.e you dont want to bite your tongue off.

Just 2 penneth worth.

I've just had my peak and heading deep into a trough so my head is a bit jumbled anyway. I'm going to go out at the weekend and try and enjoy it and not get too stressed about points, OOM or technique and go with the flow. Not sure it'll work but I'll give it a go.

I read a book which I think was called Zen Golf. It helped me understand lots about myself and now I am able to clear my mind quite well. I usually have one swing thought but only a minor one (just now I'm trying to keep my arms and wrists straight at take away) You need to visualise the shot before you set up and trust yourself. :D

3 swing thoughts that help my game, I used to be a terrible slicer but now I hit straight and long. The source of my slice was trying to hit the ball with my shoulders too much.

1.) Always complete a full shoulder turn (except short picthes and chips), turn so your back is facing down the fairway. This simple swing thought helps me enormously and helps you on to point 2 below.

2).2nd most important and vital tip for me, especially helpful for slicers. Practise swing a couple of times where you start your downswing with your arms and you must must must feel like you are hitting everything to the right. Exaggerate this in your practise swing and you will get close to achieving it in your proper swing. Combats over the top, or swinging outside the line.

3. When you are stood over the ball thinking about the 2 things above you will have a tendency to tighten and feel wooden. You must remember to relax and swing freely else it wont happen for you.

These tips help me a great deal , they might help you.
