I haven't had the pleasure of playing a huge amount of golf courses throughout my life but have played a few decent ones that I consider to be good courses and ones I would return to again if money allows it. Last Wednesday I was invited along to Sweetwoods on a society day, having lived about 10 minutes from it for the best part of 20 years but never playing it I jumped at the chance but wasn't holding my breath.
WOW! If you haven't had the chance to play it then book a round ASAP! Everything about the place screams quality. The clubhouse has apparently been re-developed not long ago and sports a very modern look now with comfy seating, wall mounted plasma TV's and a lovely patio area that over looks the 18th green.
The course was in immaculate condition, the greens were fast and true, the fairways were lush and well defined and the general layout is superb. I'm a Sussex boy born and bred but now reside in Essex, I know what Sussex/Kent is like for hills, Sweetwoods makes such good use of the land with massively undulating greens that would scare a golfer of any ability and some very difficult downhill approach shots, in particular 4 and 18....I still have no idea how to play to the greens on those two holes, for someone of my level of golf, I daren't say that an element of luck is very much needed to hit those greens as the approaches to them are downhill and fast! My uncle hit a pitching wedge into the 4th from about 160 yards and rolled out the back of the green!
The challenge of the course is unmistakable, I was over the moon to come in with 30 points, especially as I had never played it before. The best holes on the course without a shadow of a doubt are 12-18, the final third. 12 is a beautiful par 4, dog leg right with water stretching down the right side of the fairway. When you get around the dog leg it opens up and the view is stunning.
13 and 14 are par 5's that are not for the feint of heart. 13 dog legs right and has a banked fairway, 14 (SI1) dog legs left and has a ditch at 190-200 yards which you can either take on off the tee of layup. Both holes really make you think, require accuracy and sensible golf. 15 and 16 offer big challenges, 15 a long par 3 with a big green, 16 another blind tee shot that dog legs left to one of the most undulating greens on the course. 17 is a short par 3 with the tee block in the middle of a lake and 18 is most definitely one of the hardest finishing holes I have ever played, little bit left then a little bit right, downhill approach, heavily guarded green and a lot of tree's one of which is in the middle of the fairway.
I have rambled on long enough, in short, this course goes up there as one of my favourite courses I have played. 14 is my favourite hole I have ever played, a must play for anyone and one I plan on returning too very soon!
