Basically it is my birthday in a couple of weeks and for various reasons I just do not feel like celebrating this year. Rather than upset anyone the plan now is just to go away for the day/night. Looking for somewhere within a couple of hours of Lincolnshire, decent hotel, nice food, maybe something to do in the area. A bit of a broad and vague brief but any suggestions

Educated guessing why you're not at your best I'd suggest somewhere with activities to keep your brain occupied. Center Parcs at Sherwood Forest.

If you're a foodie then Morston Hall (http://www.morstonhall.com/) or The Hoste Arms (http://www.thehoste.com/) in north Norfolk are really good, as is the The White Horse at Brancaster (http://whitehorsebrancaster.co.uk/). All three with access to some great coastline and golf courses in the area if you're taking your clubs.

If you're looking for a city break instead of being out in the country then Norwich has some reasonable hotels and plenty to do around the city.

Having just come back from a week staying in Wells I can second this part of the world for a visit... Really helped that we were spoilt with great weather... Not always a certainty this late in the year...

Take a look at the Christmas markets in Manchester, it's pretty hectic in parts but they're spread over the city centre now.
If you like your food and drink then I think Mcr this time of the year could fit the bill.

What do you mean by nice food?

If looking for choice of Michelin starred restaurants in one city without going to London then Birmingham is your ideal choice.

All the other usual attractions, museums, galleries, shopping, largest German Christmas market outside Germany. Plenty of bars, particularly in Broad Street and the canal basin.

Had a fantastic few days in Brum a couple December's back. Plenty of decent curry houses too.

Chester is lovely, we go time and time again and never get bored, York is very similar loads of places to discover that you've never seen on previous visits. Edinburgh is fantastic, Leeds has loads going on too, simialr to Manchester with the huge christmas markets and loads going off on a night and very good restaurants and bars.

If you want somewhere like a small village with a couple of decents pubs, amazing walks, perfect setting, very chilled then try Malham in North Yorkshire and stay at the Lister Arms. Open fire pub, great ales, fantastic food and really nice rooms. 5 minutes from Malham Tarn and they've just opened a new barn that you can stay in too.

Its my 40th at the end of Jan and will probably go back to Chester for a couple of nights.

Yup me and Missis Tash were there yesterday and it is as good as it's ever been. Nice to have a mulled wine of an evening. It was a bit party though. You will be spoils for choices for food.

Try Harrogate. Plenty of choice of hotels and restaurants. Go to Bettys for afternoon tea.
If you are travelling by car scenic countryside in all directions (except south) and things to see or do.

Some top ideas, thanks. Stamford. Little close to home as I went to school there and meet my mates there quite regularly. It is a nice place though

Right now ave done me jobs, am chillin out sat on me pumper with me me Misstriss from Italy, Val pocella. She is shaped like a bottle and the only red I like. Anyway seeing as your from Rutland which is out in the sticks. You need a bit of Ying to you daily yang. Stamford, to much like Tuesday follows Monday. Chester, gorgeous, but to far. Has to be a major City. Again Liverpool to far. Nottingham is good. But has to be Manchester. If you are with Missis or Mr GB72, the Christmas market is the icing on a shopping cake. The sights and sounds of Manchester at the moment are to behold. Food, if that's your Zanadau could be a problem, by the time you have filled your face during the day at the markets, you may not want to dine out during the evening and just get bladdered instead.. It's what I call " A happy problem". Wherever you go merry Birthday.
