This is a bit of a different review in that it is not a course that I would recommend everyone play or that I would even join. What it is, however, is a perfect example of how to make the most of what you have.

Sudbrook is a short, 9 hole course where I went when I first started playing. It has a combination of par 3 and par 4 holes and 2 flags on each hole if you wish to play the full 18. As I was on a day of yesterday and had not played for a while I thought I would go down there for a quick knock rather than brave the range. You can play all day on the course for £10 and as such is great for practice. After all, you can get as much golf as you want for little more than the cost of a couple of buckets of balls.

When I arrived the club's attitude was superb. The pro noticed I was on my own and asked if I wanted him to find me some playing partners in the clubhouse. Now my club pro does not do this for members and it was very welcome. In fact I was asked by several groups if I wanted to join in as I went round and as it is a loop of 9 I joined in with a couple of groups at various stages.

The course itself is short but tight with some dangerous water and bunkering. It keeps up a reasonable challenge whilst giving the opportunity to swing most clubs in the bag and there are a few holes which invite different approaches. The 18th, for example, allows a safe iron down the fairway or a drive over a corner. The course remains in decent condition considering the footfall and the greens were in reasonable nick.

The point of this, however, is that this is the sort of place that we could do with more of. Affordable for all and a great place to learn or practice. The membership is cheap as well so those disenfranchised by the cost of other local courses can still play and have a handicap.

This is a great example of using what you have. The course is decent considering the land restrictions, the price is affordable to all, the food and drink is good and well priced and the staff and members are helpful and friendly. If the attitude shown here could be transferred to a full 18 hole course near me then I would sign up like a shot.

Could not agree more mate.

Like you, Sudbrook Moor was the place me and my friends played at when we were young and just starting golf. We were Junior members at Belton Woods, but we were also Junior Members here as it cost us £10 per year and £1 per day (!!!)

This was about 12 years ago and although the course is relatively the same now, they have changed some hole layouts to make them longer and added some *great* practice facilities (including a 12 bay range with half the bays covered for bad weather).

I played here on the 2nd Jan this year with my Girlfriend's brother, and had a blast. Didn't play magnificent golf but took me back to my youth and it was interesting how different my approach was to alot of the holes now I'm bigger and stronger.

For £10 per day (I think it's £12 or £14 at the weekends, but still good value), I'd be more than happy to play here whenever I'm back in Lincolnshire, as, like you say, it's great for practice as you can go round as much as you like.

Glad to hear you had a good one yesterday. I was really pleased to see how the place had developed when I was there a few weeks ago.

Glad you enjoyed it.
I used to teach the juniors there and ended up working in the cafe and shop too.
The owner, Tim Hutton is one of the nicest hard working guys you'll ever meet.
It's only problem is it's a victim of its own success, gets very busy at times.
I hope you didn't beat my course record 64? (18 holes before anyone says anything )

I've probably asked you this before Bob, but how long ago was that? I never had lessons there, but when I met you the other week, you did look vaguely familiar.

P.S. - I'm up the 1st or 2nd week of Feb, so I'll pick up my new V-Easy if that's O.K :D

I was there from the summer 2000 until I left Easter 2006

I would have been there at a similar time as well. I was a member for most of a season, may have been 2006.
