Strong 3 wood vs driver

Evening all.....

Rather than Hi-jack a thread i said id start another...
I played this morning and my driver cost me 4 holes...
I hit 3 wood off nearly all our par 4's....Our longest par 4 being 419mtrs (458 yards)
I can hit the 3 wood as good off the deck as off the tee and im wondering would i benefit from a 12 degree 3 wood instead of the big man....

Somehow i find the smaller head of a wood far easier to control than a driver.Plus im alot straighter with it ..Is this odd...
I dont give up a lot in length than my partners and the odd time i can even be longer but im seriously thinking of putting the driver in the bin!

My tee shots are destroying decent cards

Does anyone not carry a driver?

Why not look at a 11/12 degree driver...???? many players now use drivers with this loft, it allows you to have the best of both worlds.

I dont think that the loft is a problem lee....
Dont get me wrong i can hit a driver just not where i want too
Im way too erratic with the thing...I much prefer being straight rather than having to reload or chip sideways from the cabbage.

What shaft is in your driver? same as your 3 wood?

Are you hitting the driver out the middle quite often? If you are then its your swing that is at fault for the wild drives .

Im not completely sure Owen...
I mark my ball with a black putting line which is handy at times off the tee cos i know where iv hit it on the face....
But there are marks all over it.....
I do have swing issues which im working on but why in gods name can i hit a 3 wood practicall dead straight or with a little left to right and i cant hit the driver for toffee?


The shaft in the 3 wood is stock TFC Ping Stiff
Driver has the same but its the G10 model..

If you find what your typical bad shot is then you can find out a lot easier what your doing wrong . Try choking down on the driver?

It's not a bad idea to play a 3- wood instead of a driver ir you're struggling with the big stick. You'll maybe sacrifice 30-40 yards but its a small price to pay if you're on the fairway.

There will be holes that you will not be able to reach in two but I am guessing that you are not reaching them in two at the moment anyway.

If not two shots are coming out of the same place it would seem to indicate more of a swing fault but a wrong shaft could equally be as destructive. One that is too stiff or whippy may require some manipulation with your hands albeit sub-consciously and that is never going to repeat consistently

Have you considered a 2 wood?

I have one and it's an excellent club.

You can get them on eBay very cheap.

Buy a 910 driver and fit it with a 3 wood shaft and you will get great control and the best of both worlds. or buy a cobra 13 degree 3 wood which goes mega deep and straight( the straightness is up to the operator).

Stick to the 3 wood, extra loft gives you more room for error. Play the game from the fairway its much easier than out of the cabbage.

This is my thoughts ......Im not one that bows to peer pressure and wouldnt care if i ever hit a driver...But the few good drives i hit today with the 3 wood off the tee i had pars on those holes

I played today and I am still waiting for my 910 to come and thought to myself just use the 3 three wood (which is 13*) I ended up using the driver on the last four holes. Get the correct driver/shaft and you wont have a problem with the kit, then if you do push/pull/hook/slice it is down to you.

Have you thought of trying another driver - Taylormade maybe?

You hit a 3 wood so well due to the higher loft, I bet if you tried a higher lofted driver you would not have the same problem you have with your current drivers as you will have more forgiveness.

But i guess its all about distance, I would not be able to give up my driver as i would lose quite a few yrds using my 3 wood.

But golf is a game of each to their own....

Shaft length is my first thought, worked for me, taking an inch and a half stuff has moved me from 4 fairways a round with a 220 average to missing 4 a round and 250 average!

Some even push the 270+ area!

Shaft length is the biggest difference for me between my driver and 3 wood. I have tried gripping down on a higher loft driver and got similar distances to the 3 wood, not much point in that as I hit the three wood ok to start with. As an opposite I tried the new Cleaveland launcher with longer shaft and got more yardage for sure, but at the expense of inconsistent direction.

If the round means something to me then I only use driver on long holes where I need it to put me in place for the second shot. On the mid length holes the three wood puts you in position without as much chance of a skanky swing landing you in trouble.
