Has anyone's club taken on the WHS recommendation for allocating Stroke Indices?

Did/do you previously/currently use the 'hole difficulty' or 'matchplay' process?

No we have not and just having had 40,000 cards printed a few months ago we are not likely to for the foreseeable future.

The Whites and Yellows have been rated for difficulty which was done many years agi but the Reds are rated for matchplay.

When the system for rating for match we originally had 2 cards but so many could not get their heads around the idea the matchplay card was dropped.

There is very little matchplay played at our club, particularly when compared against Stableford or medal play.

For a short period we only had match play cards whilst the SIs were being rerated for Stableford, one hole in particular became very stupid in a Stableford comps off the white tees. SI 3 in difficulty became 8 in match play.

We havent. We thought about it but there is loads of proposed work planned for the next couple of years...new par 3 hole being built, combining two existing holes in to one hole, possibly some new tee locations, lot of bunkers being filled in or reshaped.

Course will be in a state of constant change over the coming months so not sure its worth making any changes now...the whole thing will have to be re-rated after the changes are complete and I guess thats when we will look to review the SI's.

Currently they are allocated based on the old CONGU recommendations about distributing shots for matchplay purposes. Though I did do an analysis recently comparing the hole difficulty to the allocated SI's and pretty much everything actually corresponded with the exception of a couple of holes.

Previously, we used the match play process, where an index was assigned based on where the higher handicap player needed a stroke to get a half.
We changed to the WHS system this year, where holes are ranked in difficulty to make par and index is also assigned in different triads of the course. As you can see, the most significant changes were on the par fives and par threes.

I don't know yet. I have advised that it is unnecessary as far as the introduction of WHS is concerned but if there are other reasons for changing what we have - essentially for matchplay on CONGU lines - this is the time to do it when we're having to change scorecards and tee signs.

Scottish Golf concurs with my view ....... or perhaps it's the other way round. :)
