Clear blue skies right now. Been wet all day prior.
News from our flat, one wall very wet. Need to get some one in to look at it tomorrow. Same in the flat below. Flat above has had work done to the roof. Hmm.
But the rain from upstream is still coming your way.......just come back from quick trip that brought us back through town and the flood plains for the river that runs through our town are as flooded as I have ever seen them - and the river itself is right at the limit of the widening and deepening done years ago to protect the low part of town against flooding. Not much more at all and it’s over - but the rain has stopped.
It's not just about defences. You need to solve what is causing the flood, not just build walls. Look at the problem from a different direction. Look at what is happening up stream, along the banks, what has caused the increase of run off. Building walls alone is an expensive cop out and rarely enough on it's own.
There was a local councillor from Hebden Bridge, flooded badly again last week, who spoke well about this subject the other day. Worth reading his comments if you can dig them out, they weren't rocket science.
To be fair, The Environment Agency are doing a lot of this but they are fighting other govt depts, budgets etc. I think they know what needs to be done, they just can't get it done quickly enough. They then get hammered when floods occur. Tough gig.
Indeed it is - and the A31 (the main route to Winchester from Guildford) between us and Alton was earlier closed both ways (may still be) as the flooding on the flood plain of the River Wey has spilled onto the road. But the rain from upstream is still coming your way.......
