After lots of practice I am now attacking with my 52deg wedge from 110 yards in. Generally its one bounce and stop for the ball. Somtimes I want to get roll on the green, how do I do this while getting the distance I now 'feel'???

Hit a three quarter pitching wedge

110 yards with a 52 degree wedge is a full hard shot, thats how you generate the stop and spin, if you want to have it land and release, you have to hit a softer shot with a bigger club, generating less backspin, more release.

I would take less club and swing easier. Sounds like you are trying to force it. I'm not sure of your yardage (but not opening that particular can of worms) but I would be dropping down and looking at nothing more than a 10 o'clock swing. It'll carry further and should bounce and release better

Doesn't work for me. I get MORE spin with 3/4 shots.

As bonkers as it sounds, I'd maybe try moving the ball a tad forward (like an inch) so the club angle of attack has flattened out.

If I want the ball to stop, I hit down. If I want a bit of run, I try and pick it off cleanly. Works for me, but doing it with regularity is in my dreams.

I have got my 52 working really well from full shot down to bump and runs- I am not confident with the PW, I will give it ago and try it next round.

Also I was wondering about trying to catch a touch behind the ball (my old shot), not so much ball/squeeze/groove time - probably better off with a knock down shot.
Any thoughts?

Cheers I will give it a bash- for 6months I have been trying to get spin, now I have it I realise its a bit of a hinderance.

Just to clear up I am getting lots of spin from 110yards in - not just from ths full distance shot, so its not forced.

One of my partners even asked me how I manage to spin my 9iron. :D Pity I cant spin them out of bunkers.

Ken there are three ways,
1. Take a club extra and hit it easier.
2. Hit it harder, itll go past the flag then spin back
3. never hit it off the fairway, the rough is better to dampen the spins' moral.

It depends what sort of hole it is your playing.

But

The simple rule is to club up to your PW hit a lower easy shot. It might bite a bit then will realease on more than a SW would.

Why is that? The game is all about control. If you're spinning back from the flag try hitting it PAST the pin by a few feet.

If you want to dull the spin then do what RGDave recommends... move the ball towards the middle of your stance a touch, it should land soft without much spin.

Not that simple my man. Even low handicap players struggle with this.

Why ? Mainly consistancy with player and the course.

You have to remember most people dont play on a tour standard course. When your playing some greens could be cut others not. Some watered others not so on and so on.

Do you no you are going to get spin every shot = no chances are you wont.

Even if you did do you no how much it will spin every shot = no

Being good at Golf has a lot to do with playing percentage shots. For the majority of people playing for spin is not one of those shots because most of the time its not gonna happen.

Being able to spin the ball is just another tool you have to use when you need to. Lets face it most people cant do it anyway but they see it as being the be all and end all.

I agree, courses change, even greens can be different hole to hole. You never really know what you're going to get unless you religiously only play your home course.

I'd never say that spinning the ball is a hindrance, if you can do it then you can attack the pins instead of dropping everything on the front edge and hoping it releases perfectly.

I agree that most of us are capable whether through luck or design to be able to hit shots that land and stop quickly but not many of us mid handicappers can regularly get backspin and be able to control it. I speak from experience as I'm generating loads of spin especially with my 52 degree wedge and have been know to zip if back 5 feet or so. It looks great but when its 5 feet short to start with and I'm thinking birdie time its not ideal.

The greens at my club are taking a well hit shot and stopping quickly but I've played other courses (Leatherhead springs to mind) where the greens are firmer (and quicker) and even a well struck wedge will bounce forward on landing. I guess as justoneuk and others have said you'll never going to be able to judge it consistantly on a regular basis. My advice is to play the percentage shots and aim for a shot that lands and then releases.
