Vardy. Caps, 22, Goals, 7
Rashford Caps 19, Goals 3
Welbeck. Caps 39, Goals 16
Sterling. Caps 38, Goals 2

Based on the stats Sterling seems a strange choice.
Only if he wants him in the team to score goals

Today was the best performance I've seen from Sterling but I still don't think he's good enough at this level. His scoring record (2 goals now in 44 games or so) is poor return and he needs far too many efforts to create a clinical chance. Had a good chance today and fluffed his lines. Usually poor with possession and goes down too many blind alleys with the ball. Today was better (bar his great chance) and his pace caused issues but I don't think he's the answer and I'd like to see Rashford get a run of starts. Aside from everything it's important to give squad players a good taste of playing against top sides so when we need them in a tournament they are ready.

Definitely no witch hunt from me. I simply don't think he's the best option and feel Rashford would retain the ball better and create better chances for others. I'd like to see Sterling score as no doubt it'll do his confidence a lot of good. I'm not reading anything into the Belgium game other than it was a means to an end and a decision that has reaped dividends. No-one really shone in that game so to blame Vardy etc is harsh. Even at club level, I feel Sterling needs to many opportunities to score and has missed some real howlers. He's lucky to be in a side so creative that he can get the number of chances he does and inevitably is able to convert. International football has shown you need to be more clinical and that for me is where he falls down

Im not sure what he's in the team for but then again I'm not privy to the great mans team talks.

My main criticism of him is he seems not to be aware of what is going on around him, he rarely passes the ball when that is the best option and he is not, for England much of a goal scorer. People go on about his work rate but it rarely produces anything at the end of it.

PS, this is only my opinion and other opinions are available on other forums :) most not in favour.

But what do we know.

You’d like to see Rashford get a run of starts so he’s ready for tournament football when we need him.
Can’t really see England playing too many friendlies before wednesday.
Best stick with Sterling then.

So all the chances that Sterling spurns is ok then.

On the stats posted above, I wonder what the game time for each player is? Sterling's 38 caps might be from a significant number of full matches, whereas Vardy's 22 caps might be from a significant number of starts from the bench.

Not saying that at all Bri, just asking why people want Southgate to change a winning formula, he will see things in training that we have no clue about.
As said previously the media started the witch hunt against Sterling and fans are carrying it on.
Let’s just enjoy the ride :)

I wouldn't change the team at all. Now isn't the time to start fiddling with the team. Consistent messages are what the team need. But the stats do make for compelling reading.

If want stats, he should of took Rooney

Personally I’d like to see Alli pushed up like he plays for spurs and bring in loftus cheek for sterling

Who am I to question Southgate, we're one game away from the final. But I can see why everyone is questioning Sterling. The chance before half time, he was unlucky with. The keeper did get a good hand on it to send him wide, but then instead of pulling it back to Kane, he made the wrong decision and went for glory when the chance had gone. England score and they go into half time looking very comfortable, instead just after half time it took a great save from Pickford to stop them equalizing.

There was me thinking we were looking at the stats of England's current squad.

I give you post #33
But all them goals scored by the 4 is when Rooney was playing or only just retired, so they weren’t the main man ;)

I went for Sterling because I’m hoping he’s saving his best until it counts.

This ok with you Fish?

Watched the game in a pub in Woodhall spa today, ( 40's weekend). Wished I hadn't. Bumped into a Lad who I knew at the pit years ago. He was ok but his mate was a grade one inbred tosser. How he can think it is funny hurling racial abuse at sterling and Alli in a pub full,of parents and kids is beyond me. He was told in no uncertain terms to shut up. He was reminded we had won again.
last two England games I will watch at home.
