When keeping stats how do you record your putts from the fringe?

The fringe is not the green, so if you two putt from the fringe do you class it as a 1 putt green for stats purposes or do you count it as a 2 putt.

Similarly, if you three putt from the fringe is it a 3 putt or a 2 putt for your stats???

:D :D :D :D :D :D

I count my putts only on the green. Even if I use the putter off the green I dont count that.
I think the key is to be consistant whatever way you count them.

I know people will say if you miss greens then you could chip/pitch it close for 1 putt..that doesnt sound bad if I done that all the time I'd be happy and I dont care what others think anyway.. :D

As long as you're consistent it doesn't matter.
On Tour they don't count putts from the fringe as putts so I follow suit.

As long as your consistent on how you want to keep a record it shouldn't be a problem.
A ball just off the green down in two can be either GIR with a two putt, or not a GIR with a 1 putt.
Prefer to go along with the pro's, ball has to be on the green to count as a putt.

If you count a putt from the fringe as a putt then you should count the previous shot as a GIR which it obviously wasn't.

Lies, lies and damned statistics

Oh god. Not this again. Where's Jezz? ;)

The ball has got to be on the green to be a putt. As others have said, it all falls to pieces regarding GIR stats otherwise.

You're on the fringe, you chip the ball in the hole. That's zero putts. Same if you use the putter.

This topic caused a bit of division last time around!! But for the purposes of record keeping that are in line with what is generally excepted as the 'norm'. It's a putt if it's on the green, if not, then no.

I asked this of SS2 in respect of Scoresaver and got the answer.

"Putts only count if the ball is on the green. If your ball is just on the fringe and you use your putter, this is NOT a putt".

s'good enough for me...

hmmmm................

Is it a putt if you chip close and knock it in with your wedge? :D
Is it a GIR if you two putt for par from 40yds short of the green on a links course? :D. Of course these two comments are just mischief making, all shots on the green count as putts and all shots off don't. Simples!!!!!!!

how very dare you! Mischief indeed!

What about when you have to chip whilst already on the green...I suppose that's a putt too? :p

I'm from the 'when I use a putter then it counts' camp....if you're putting from off the fringe then you should be looking to get down in 2 at worst, so really the 'off the green' putt should count....

Putts per green in GIR or as Bob says length of putts holed are a much better indicator of 'how good' your putting is....

ARGH.....It's back.....

- - - - - - - -

I had a nice game t'other day and added up my putts in the bar afterwards. I was ruing my only double on the card and the bloke I was playing said "yes, and it was a shocking 3 putt!"

I tried to justify putting from off the green at the back as it was SO downhill it was virtually impossible to leave the ball short......

It may have been a 3 putt, but I'm not losing any sleep over my 7&6 win......

:)

I though we were behind the times, but obviously you still use the stymie rule at your club :D :D :D.
