I am quite sad and record all my fairways hit, greens in regulation and putts per round. Currently playing off 17 and last season averaged just over 5 fairways and just over 2 GIR, putts was around 33. We have only 2 par threes and one par 5, the rest 4s.

Think this is quite poor, how does every body else fair ?
and what would a 14 handicapper (this years target) expect to average.

Here's mine this year.

Not sure what stats a 14 h/cap should show but probably a bit worse than mine :D

Key stats for Ian (Hcap: 10)

Fairways Hit: 45% (Hcap Std: 14)
Greens In Reg: 35% (Hcap Std: 9)
Putts Per Round: 31.53 (Hcap Std: 9)
Sand Saves: n/a (Hcap Std: n/a)
Birdie Conversion: 14% (Hcap Std: 14)
Par Scrambles: 31% (Hcap Std: 9)
Driving Distance: 244 (Hcap Std: 7)
Penalties Per Round: 0.11 (Hcap Std: Scratch)

Rounds Recorded: 19

Just got to hit a few more fairways and sink some birdie putts and I'm there - not sure where but I'm there....

I think only 2 par 3s and 1 par 5 is shocking. We have 4 par 3s and 5 par 5s all varying in lengths.

I think you cannot say what a 14 handicapper should be doing as it depends how you play. Someone could play with great finesse and skill and hit nearly every fairway but miss loads of greens and 2 putt everytime. Whereas another 14 H/C may be all over the place but be a great chipper and putter

It really depends on the type of player you are. You have all played against the them the 15 handicapper who hits the ball no where, scatters it around the course and has a short game you couldn't buy. Then there is the other one who plays like a 6 handicapper until he gets to the green.

What I am really saying is that stats are really only relative to yourself. Even pro's stats don't matter to anyone else but them, they have the same problems as us some can putt, some drive it miles, some don't miss a fairway and some miss very few greens. They just do the things they do well, very well and the things they do less well, they just do that well. We just work on a different scale to them, with the slider getting wider as the handicap gets higher.

My stats for yesterday:

Fairways hit: 42.9% (6/14)
Greens in reg: 77.8% (14/18)
Putts : 39
Putts per GIR: 2.28
Birdie conversion 7%

I played brilliant tee to green but couldn't putt this week. Despite my putting improving no end in recent weeks.

I finished 6 ovr par (2 under my handicap) but had 5 x 3 putts.

Stat's are a good thing to record (IMHO) but you must analyse them properly.

When you miss fairways is it by much?
For me yesterday: NO only a few feet usually

Do you miss on the safe side?
For me yesterday: YES

Where do you miss greens?
Most amateurs, as Bobmac mentioned the other week, are often short.

As well as anlysing numbers/%'s analyse where & why those figures occur.

ONly do it myself on an excel spreadsheet, but may try out the scoresaver website if I start playing more.
This year's stats are...
Putts: 32.3
GIR: 18.6
FIR: 32.6
Shot high 80s so far this year

GIR is probably the most important stat. If you are a very good player, then average distance from the flag per GIR is important.

Interpreting stats is difficult. There is a big difference between a fairway missed by 6 inches with the ball sitting up waiting for the next shot, and one hit 60 yards into the jungle.

There is also a trade off between GIR and putts. If you miss every green, you should be chipping some close to the flag and your first counting putt will be shorter than the guy who hits 6 irons onto the green from middle of the fairway.

IMO stats are bull last friday i putted like a chump, today i putted like pro, stats would tell me one day im sh-t the next im great imo thats why im an ameteur and no stat would change that.

That's the reason why you always have to take the long view with golf stats. Looking at putts or greens hit or sand saves for a single round is pretty pointless. Looking at your averages over 20+ rounds is much more meaningful.

It's SO true.

We were totting up scores the other day and my mate was chuffed he'd only had 32 putts to my 34.....
I then reminded him I'd hit 8 greens to his 2... :D

oh

and he'd lost! :) Silly billy. :)

That's the only issue I have with my current stats. A missed fairway is a missed fairway. But there is a huge difference in just off and the ball being sat up beging for a five or severn wood and being in the woods having to play it out sideways. But as it stands it's a miss.

I think only 2 par 3s and 1 par 5 is shocking

Firstly, our course has varying lengths par 4s from two under 290 yards to one at 465. The course is a James Braid course and has held final qualifying for the open a couple of times and is well thought of.

Secondly I think, having read the replies, stats really are personal and best viewed over the season. I usually compare mine at the end of each year and see how I have managed against my targets.

Those who use SS 2 what are there comments ?

Finally these posts remind of a quote " there are lies, damned lies and statistics."

That tells me everything I already knew. I'm hacking it everytime I play

If your a stat man then SS2 is for you.

Well worth the outlay. Its up to you how you read them. I have kept stats now for 5 yrs+ and its great looking back at them and seeing progress, some pretty slow.

Check ot the website for details of ss2.

Like someone else said, I wouldn't be too worried at the low fairways hit if they're not missed by much, but the 2 GIR per round is something to be worked on. Is it low because your tee shots are not giving you the chance to get to the green, or are your iron shots poor?

I use SS2, and when I'm recording scores I put an X into the GIR part of the scoresheet if my tee shot hasn't left me a realistic shot at the green ie. chipping out sideways or bunting down the fairway. If I have a shot at the green I record where I missed it, left, right etc.

On Sunday, of the 5 greens I missed when I had a shot, 4 of them were long, and 3 of those were from under 80 yards!

My stats since I started using SS2...

Imurg... no bunkers in 19 rounds? Wish I could do that! :)

Hahahaha,

He obviously doesn't know how good The Irvine Golf Club is! Alan your course is one of the toughest in Ayrshire. Miss a fairway its a hack out the heather which is in turn going to effect your greens hit stats.

Stats are great and a key indicator on what you need to work on but I also wouldn't get too hung up on them.

SS2 is great if your prepared to take a mid term view. its no good to look at it round by round.

Here are mine for 20 rounds, my club Hcp is 11.3, but i play on a track thats 5200 yards:

Key stats for Simon (Hcap: 9)

Fairways Hit: 69% (Hcap Std: 1)
Greens In Reg: 57% (Hcap Std: 2)
Putts Per Round: 33.37 (Hcap Std: 15)

Will take a serious look at Scoresaver, sounds good.

Have played 8 medal rounds so far this year and my stats so far are Fairways hit 6.125 (38.2%) GIR 2.625 (14.5%) and 35.4 putts. The first two are an improvement on last year but, as many have said, will review again mid season.

My low gir figure was generally down to some very poor tee shots last year. Resorted to playing 5 wood off almost every tee at present and actually hit 10 out of 16 fairways a couple of weeks ago. But sods law decreed my irons would be poor that day !!

Have been using my stats to help plan my lessons as well.

If you're only hitting 14.5% of greens but having 35 putts, you might want to make one of those lessons your short game. Chipping closer is a sure fire way to have less putts
