Stableford?

I'm not adverse to it but it seems that the majority of posts here are about stableford competitions or it appears that way.
Think I've played 3 in the last 2 years.

Is it more common in England? even the friendly games reported on here are stableford whereas the majority I see or play in are strokeplay.

Just an observation and wondered if its really that popular?

Hate stableford. It's a hackers charter.

However, the saturday swindle is stableford, so is the sunday one. People don't like strokeplay for casual golf, as it is too serious, and takes too long.

Most societies, and forum meets are also stableford.

Most of our comps are medal though. Proper golf.

I prefer stroke, concentrates the mind more. Our club has around 90% stroke comps during the year.
I think some folks quote points even in stroke comps as it flatters their actual score a little too

My club used to be mainly stableford comps but this year there has been a predominance of medals and also a larger number of comps with 18 handicap as the max. I think the lower handicappers are fighting back after a few years of high handicappers shooting obscene scores.

That is the good think about my club at the moment, quite a few new people were voted on to the committee and those that held their posts were advocates of change. We now have the course in as good a condition as it has been (considering the dry weather) and a more varied competition structure.

Your handicap is soley based on stableford. Medal is irrelevant to handicap.

Yep, but the stableford correction means that any single hole score is limited to the lowest score that would give you 0 points. So it is easier to estimate handicap reductions by stableford. If CSS is the same as par, then handicap reductions begin above 36 points etc.

Our club runs a monthly medal plus a midweek one and there are a good smattering of honours board evetns which are medal too so I think there is enough opportunity for the "purists" to get their fill. Personally a competitive round of golf is just that - me versus the course and my handicap (usually only one winner) irrespective of format. If I'm playing casual golf its more about the company than the score so stableford suits everyone

I get your argument as anything I score 0 on gets rounded down to a net double. ie par 5 si5 is 7 for par for me, so therefore anything above 9 becomes 9 for handicap.

Therefore 18 holes where I score 2 points a hole should work out at 72 + 25 = 97

If I get my 36 points in 15 holes the other 3 would all be above a net bogey and get rounded down to a net double bogey.

Yes, that is correct. You will (probably) be in the buffer zone no matter what you score on the last 3.

You can count just points and adjust handicap on that score. Convert CSS to points and you are in business. I score 40 points on a course where CSS is 1 shot less than par (equivalent to 37 points), so I lose 3 times 0.2. I score 44 points, I lose 7 times etc.

We don't have enough Medal rounds at our place, just the one monthly medal. I'm a bit peeved because we don't have a medal next month (september) and after shooting a net 66 in this months medal I was looking forward to putting another 'card' in for the HDID/GM order of merit.

We average about one comp every 3 weeks at weekends, and about the same during the week (which I can't play in). It isn't many really.

medal play is real golf and you dont get to kid yourself how good you are/are not;played 36 holes at weekend comp and it was tough going off of 15. Made me realise off the back whites, and unable to 'pick up', what a proper handicap actually is.....

Only 3 of the singles comps at our place are stableford, all the others are medal,. Which I believe is about the right mix.

I don't know anyone who plays medal outside of comps which is a shame and there aren't that many medal comps.

I can understand the reasons why people play s'ford but I prefer medal and treat every round as if it is. Shoot a good score and the points will take care of themselves.
