I have started playing again after a 10+ year gap and have just got a handicap and I am going to start playing in the club competitions, could someone please explain what SSS is and why it sometimes differs from Par?thanks, I have tried using the search facility to no avail

Cheers

Standard Scratch Score is the score that a golfer with a scratch handicap should shoot.
I believe that it is based on the length and difficulty of the course.

Sorry but why does that differ from par??

Par for a hole is largely based on the length of the hole, a good few years ago Par 3's were holes up to 250 yards, Par 4's up to 450 yards, over that and they were Par 5's.

Now a wide open flat course consisting of 4 Par 3's,10 Par 4's, 4 Par 5's would be a Par 72.

A scratch golfer would probably shoot a score of 70 or 71 off the back pegs, hence the SSS would be 70 or 71.

A club competition played on a very windy day might return a higher score which could be say 73 ( called a competition S.S.). Needed for handicapping purposes.

Painterboy, I think the yardage change from a par 4 to a par 5 was 476 yards and not 450.

Thanks Funky, (this time of the year 250 seems like 275!)
