Spraying a golf shaft

The shaft on the putter I'm regripping is quite pitted and rusty so I'm thinking of rubbing it down and respraying black whilst Ive got the grip off, any one done this ?
Looked at replacing the shaft and it £45 for a black one ?

I wouldn't use paint, it'll scratch very easily to expose metal and look like

I'd use vinyl wrap.

The shaft in an old Ping Anser I bought on eBay was pitted. I gave it a really good rub down with wire wool and Barkeeper's Friend. It removed the pitting and left a uniform dull finish that I actually prefer to the shiny chrome.

I used Plastikote on my old putter shaft with a Matt lacquer and it didn’t scratch at all. Or at least not so you’d notice it anyway.

I've seen people use heat shrink before. Not as nice a finish as a proper paint job but IMO looks better than vinyl as you don't have the seam.

Use scrunched up aluminium foil - I find that gets rid of most rust pitting without taking the shine off the metal
