SPOTY 2025

I think I read the other day that the beeb are a billion quid out of pocket in comparison to where they were 15 years ago.

They'll be broadcasting re-runs of Brookside in the prime time slots if they don't sort themselves out soon....

It's an outdated broadcasting business model, and the winner will be one of the women in the final nominations
Would there be anything wrong if one of the women did win considering what they won this year ?

People need to remember it’s a public vote at the end of the day

Personally it’s sports personality of the year not man so have no problem with a woman winning.

I just don’t think it should ever be a person from a team regardless of gender.

Let alone one who spent most games on the bench

The team one is always interesting

But even in a team some players stand out or produce moments that are key

Whilst Kelly was on the bench she came on and produced moments at crucial times during the tournament and did get in the team of the tournament

Isn't that a little harsh? I would suggest that Bobby Moore (1966), Ian Botham (1981), and Jonny Wilkinson (2003) were deserving winners. Their contributions to the respective team victories are legendary.

So, would you do away with all individual awards in team sports - player of the year, Ballon D’Or, etc?

Stokes in 2019 as well? I happened to watch highlights of his 135 in ashes today, many saying it is one of the best innings ever. Think he did well in leading England to world cup win that year as well?

Yes she did but without the other players she wouldn’t have been there.
Quite happy for them to win team of the year but that’s the point for me it’s a team

They all did fantastic things but as they are part of a team they shouldn’t get an individual award in my opinion

Maybe they could have an award for biggest/best contribution to a team doing well but it’s a team sport so for me there shouldn’t be individual awards especially when there are individuals who could win it

Yes, come on as a sub, missed a penalty but managed to score the rebound. If she wins its a travesty - if the Beeb want to give it to a woman then surely Hannah Hampton deserves it more than Kelly - at least she saved some penalties!!!

Can you be more misinformed and sexist in one post?

It is a public vote and not a BBC choice so maybe do a bit of research before spouting rubbish,

I know Kelly is a footballer, but compared to Kildunne she is way behind. Kildunne's input and influence in Englands games during the World Cup were immense, as has her effect on young females looking into and taking up the sport. Womens rugby really has benefitted from England success, and such high profile players like Ellie Kildunne.

It is an age old argument to which there is no right or wrong answer but think how many sports being celebrated you can buy the rights to for the cost of match if the day and the fa cup. How many sports could get shown week in week out of the BBC were not just interested in the Crown Jewel events. But match of the day is massively popular so do you lose that for a wider coverage of other sports.

Popular vote.

Football is more popular than Rugby.

Being simply "good looking" helps. Man or woman.

Being "inspirational" in some way can attract votes.

Chloe Kelly has all these going for her. And she turned up in the crowd to support England Women Rugby team.

But for Rory's long road to the Augusta win and another Ryder Cup win coping with very hostile "fans" - I hope he gets it this year.

But it matters not very much at all.
Not much wrong with it mattering little.

It’s a tough one as the BBC needs to look at the wider audience and will go for popular ones

But they do have the massive events like Olympics etc

But it’s always going to be dictated by the sports themselves looking for as much money as possible

Fair points but the idea of the licence fee was that the BBC could broadcast niche viewing without a worry about audiences.

With the Olympics I love that it is free to sit but I would sell the rights with an obligation to promote and broadcast some of the lesser known events year round that are not shown elsewhere. You want the bug events you have to support the little ones
