I caught sight of the nominees for this year’s SPOTY and I don’t think I’ve ever felt so completely bereft of enthusiasm. Underwhelming is an understatement.

Hannah Hampton, Chloe Kelly, Ellie Kildunne, Rory McIlroy, Luke Littler and Lando Norris.

On the basis that golfers never win it, darts is a minority sport and F1 is viewed by many as rather elitist/niche, it would seem that it will be a straight fight between the three ladies. Which the cynic in me believes is precisely what the BBC are after.

Won’t be bothering again this year, I’m afraid.

The “odd” years are always a little different because there is no Olympics , World Cup etc and when you look at the sporting year - what other GB sports stars have really stood out
 
I find it particularly weird that the BBC have continued with this as they seem to be showing less and less sport for various reasons,
It’s like having the soap awards on sky sports.

I have never agreed that the person who wins should be part of a team but that’s another subject.

Not for me I’m afraid and not watched for many years
 
Ellie Kildunne is widely seen as the world's best female rugby player at the moment. She starred in the England team that won the World Cup this year. I don't see why she wouldn't be a very worthy winner. She's brilliant.

Having said that, I can't see me watching it.

Dai Rees and Nick Faldo.

John Surtees, Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Nigel Mansell (twice), Damon Hill (twice) and Lewis Hamilton.

There has only been one Rugby winner - J. Wilkinson

Those were back in the day that these sports were shown on the BBC. Those days are gone, as has the wider interest in them. Fans only now.

I've long since stopped getting annoyed by the options on this. It past its sell by date many years ago, couldn't tell you when I last watched it. It's an irrelevance.
 
Will be honest but I’m a little disappointed that Lottie Woad isn’t shortlisted for Young SPOTY…as the criteria is…

’recognised as a sporting superstar of the future and for their outstanding achievement in the world of sport this year’

But perhaps not too surprised…with golf, never mind women’s golf, never featuring much as it doesn’t really register in the public consciousness. I’m not sure how Luke Littler (shortlisted) fits with the ‘superstar of the future’ bit given he already is one…and is shortlisted for SPOTY 🤷‍♂️😘

Anyway..I doubt that she’ll be that bothered though it would have been nice for women’s golf to have been so recognised, with Lottie and Charley both in World Top 10 at one point…first time ever two British Women in golf’s world women’s top ten.

You’re going all the way back to BBC Sports Review Of The Year, which was a seasonal highlight and well worth watching.

SPOTY is a different kettle of fish entirely and, as others have suggested over recent years, became largely irrelevant the more the BBC lost broadcasting rights to the majority of high profile live sporting events.

How many times now has McIlroy been nominated? Never won.

I don't believe it has changed much over the decades. Format pretty much the same. Seemed a bit daft to me in the 1970s.
Tony Jacklin came second twice - beaten by Ann Jones and Henry Cooper. Princess Anne winning - second place George Best.
Robin Cousins beating Seb Coe.

Its name has always been wrong, though.
Popular Sporting Achievement Award. Not much to do with personality.

The show on the night has changed massively - apart from the fact it is now hidden in a midweek slot not prime Sunday evening. They used to have guests showcasing their skills in the studio, had loads of clips form all sports throughout the year and was quite interesting. Now it is just stills taken from other broadcasters and bland interviews with media trained stars with no personality.
I am interested in who wins but won't sit through the show, will just tune in at the end to see the bit I am interested in.
 
Its a public/popular vote.
I notice a huge increase in women's sport in recent years. Girls and women can vote for successful females in a bigger way than years ago.
I think that there will be another female winner this year.
Littler and Norris do not have enough popular appeal compared with Kildunne and Kelly.
Discussion about the merits of their achievements has only a small relevance.

You are not the first to mention changes in the show. I made no comment about the show. I kept all my comments to the Award.
What has the show got to with who wins the Sport Personality Award?
Voters don't have to watch the show.
The Award hasn't changed much - always been a bit daft, in my view.

Went to watch it a few years back. Someone gave a me a free ticket. Good night out to be fair. Enjoy the actual "sports review" part of the proceedings more so than the actual award itself.
 
Rory will win it , he is going to attend this year's debacle for the first time in over a decade ,it would appear to be already sorted who has won .
Just my opinion.

He moved house especially so he's only go a short trip to pick up the trophy. Absolute career highlight. 😛
