With some Amazon vouchers kicking around I was going to get some new softspikes for the Footjoys. Always played with pulsar and black widow ones, but my eye was caught to the Champ Pro Stingers. However, they do have the big metal spike, and I got to thinking, are these now frowned upon, or even banned at courses?

Though going by your profile pic mate, I'd not be coming up to you to tell you either...

So, to summarise then, they are worth getting, but take a spare set with me when I play, and they are no more likely to have me go @rse over t1t down the steep cart path?

I prefer spikes but did have an issue with spikes at a club we were playing in a match last season who wouldn't let me wear them. Other than that never had an issue and thanks for the post as its reminded me to go and put some fresh ones in for the season

I've never had my shoes checked. Not once. I use cleats but the champ pro stingers look as if they would pass the "no metal spike" test, if you ask me.
Old-style metal spikes were scary sharp things that would tear up greens with the smallest of grazes.....these look OK.

I guess the pragmatic view would be to be prepared to change them in the event of a problem. The q? one has to ask therefore is; are your spikes removable at a moment's notice? Mine aren't.

In the old days, I used to take them out every few months, chuck out the duds and clean them/grease them up before screwing them back in. A bit of Vaseline or motor-use grease will do it. :) I think I even resorted to copper brake grease before.

I've got Pro Stingers in and I remember the old metal spikes too.
While using Pro Stingers I've not left a mark on a green - can't say that for the old spikes.
