Hi
Just a very quick question of which, yes I should know the answer but not sure :o

My ball was on the fringe today so before I putted onto the green, I went forward to repair a couple of pitch marks and also I repaired two bad spike marks on the green.

Now as I was off the green I thought this was ok to do so, but my f/c went into meltdown, saying I was wrong to do so and should learn the rules before I next play

This was on the 7th and as I wasn't sure of the rule I picked up and gave him the hole, played the rest of the game in silence as he wouldn't speak to me just spent the time tutting to himself.

Was I wrong ?

If the spike marks were in your line then i believe you arent allowed to repair them

Its the one rule in golf i believe should be changed

If you're off the green you can repair marks as long as they don't improve your line or potential line.
Probably best to leave spike marks until you've finished the hole
Pitch marks on the green can be done at any time

Then you get into the same question as identifying a divot.
Is itnanspike mark, is it a mark made by something else..?
If you're able to repair any mark, some people would be all day.....

Well people dont repair pitch marks regulary enough so the more people repairing marks on the green the better - would just make it nice and simple and say any mark on your line can be repaired.

Cheers for that, on the marks was near to my line but not on it, but close enough for him to think so, the other not on my line.

As I said I gave him the hole and anyway he beat me 4&3 so didn't effect the out come.

You live and learn 👍

Cheers

So you don't think that the ones that do repair pitch marks won't start repairing everything in sight..?
Maybe we can use the time we don't stay at the halfway house to repair every square inch of green instead

I believe people will repair most on their line or we can leave the green with holes all over it with no care - they can do it whilst others are checking a putt from 4 different angles.

Im all for helping the greenstaff and keeping the greens in good conditions and with spend time repair my pitch mark plus others who havent bothered

Completely illogical! And another sure-fire way to increase the time a round takes!

If they don't repair pitch marks, then they sure as heck ain't going to repair spike marks!

It's nice and simple now!

Though spike marks are particularly frustrating, particularly when following a serial offender! Of course, I repair the ones that affected my putt, so that the following groups aren't affected by them!

I can't understand why anyone would go into meltdown and not speak due to a rule problem. You conceded the hole rather than chance breaking a rule you weren't sure of so, whether or not he was right, you gave in to his ruling so why couldn't he just accept that and carry on properly?

Having just left the club and talking to a couple of his playing partners, I have found out the reason he went into meltdown,it was the fact I challenged him, wrongly as it turns out, but apparently he doesn't like people questioning his knowledge of the rules. Even though I gave him the hole as I did say to him I wasn't 100% sure, but that's all it takes apparently!!

Even Jiminez queried a decision last week, you are entitled to query a players "ruling" look how many "myths of the rules of golf" get talked about on here!

Seems a petulant reaction by the opponent especially when the OP conceded the hole without debate. It's a tricky one although how many people wear spikes at your club these days. I know many pros still do so it's an issue on tour but pace of play there is snail like already without adding in more time wasted repairing these. I'd rather club golfers repaired pitch marks every time.

Since I started playing comps and got a handicap a few years ago, I have heard any number of rules myths, the OP was right to raise the query.

You will always find the correct ruling on here
