Played Spey valley today, that’s by far the best inland course I’ve played yet. Views were amazing and the course was brilliant with 6/7/8 and the 9th the stand out holes for me. Course was long my legs started to get tired around the 16th would definitely get a buggy next time. Only negative about the course was the bunkers, not sure if the greenkeepers have just gave up on them but almost all of them were covered in dog paws and holes dug in them everywhere. I did notice an awful lot of dog walkers just walking up and down the fairways today so guessing they have a real problem with dog walkers on the course but apart from the bunkers the course was brilliant.

Just about to get ready to play boat of garten this morning, can’t wait I see it’s rated better than Spey valley and Spey valley was some course

Ratings are a bit arbitrary and preferences are personal things . I've never played Spey Valley but love Boat of Garten, I wouldn't worry if you prefer Spey Valley just enjoy the Boat for what it is . FWIW from the look and sound of Spey Valley you will find the Boat shorter but tighter.
Where are you getting your ratings from as a matter of interest?

Totally agree with the OP's comments, especially about the buggy everybody slept soundly the night we played here last year, the 6 hour drive and early start also playing its part.

The setting can't be beat, course is meh. Condition usually really poor as you've alluded to, especially the greens. Long walks between some holes make it a slog.

Boat of Garten next door is a much better choice

+11 actually played possibly the best golf I’ve played yet just had 3 bad holes that seen me in the bunker. Had a bunch of birdie puts but just none dropped. Just finished boat of garden played way worse but scored *8 with 3 birdies and an eagle lol but I honestly played way better yesterday

As mentioned above, Spey is a gorgeous course (snow still on the mountains in the distance, was April time), it absolutely piddled it down the day we all played in in a GM weekend ( Spey, Castle Stuart and Nairn). This was ten years ago pretty much though, dont remember having a bad word to say about it bar the submarined 18th green.
