Speeches

My suggestion would be to keep it short and sweet.
Thank the club,greenkeepers,bar staff.
I think most people are unhappy they didnt win,so they dont want someone wollowing in there own glory.

in every speech at a golf club i've heard, some popular hacker has always been on the end of the "having his ball retriever regripped" joke. never fails.

Wonder if they've ever used that at Bearwood Lakes for PN Wokingham... may have to have a chat with their captain!

Yours may be the 5th speech made, so the advice about short and sweet is very good! Thank all the staff and your playing partners on the day. If the pro's given you lessons, give them a nod. And thank the captain, obviously. No anecdotes needed and no need to try to be funny either.

Dont forget to thank the Sponsor if there is one , they need encouragement to renew it again next year ..

just adress your Captain , Lady captain or presidents who ever are there , the rest the lads have told ya ..

My embarasing moment was after the GM final, was in such surprise at winning i completely forgot to make speech or thank anyone , luckily M Chapman who Homer & myself had played with stood up & thanked GM , FoA , & Cleveland etc .. i did email Mike & Jezz later to apologise tho . felt a right tit afterwards ,

Be yourself and imagine you are talking to one person
Thank you all for playing so badly to allow me to win.....usually goes down well.
DON'T do a 50 year old golf joke.
General thanks is good ....all the staff involved in making the event such a success... works well as in the heat of the moment you usually leave out one group.
General praise is good.........We all know what a friendly club Hackett Downs is.

I have done loads of speeches most very well rehearsed, best one was at my daughters wedding reception, totally un-rehearsed as I was not expecting to speak.

I won an open recently and was asked to say a few words... took me somewhat by surprise.

I stammered out vague thanks to people I could think of and tried to praise the course while being realistic about how wet and muddy it had been...

Don't think I was very successful! Terrible, in fact. :o

Good if you know in advance you'll be speaking - gives you a chance to think it through a bit!
