Got a 12.30 funeral to attend at S/H crematorium. What's my best route from the Glasgow area and approx travel time, any road works to avoid ???.
I was thinking maybe 2 to 3 hours via M74 to Carlisle then cut across country , thoughts .

I think you are about right. A69 across from Carlisle, down a bit on the A1 near to Sunderland and then you are into local traffic, presume you will have a satnav. The main roadworks in that area I think relate to a junction near to the Tyne Tunnel, south end, but you will miss that (Testo's roundabout in case any locals are wondering where I am thinking of).

MiB can certainly help with any small details, this is his area, so maybe worth a pm. Some other 'south of the river' lads can advise as well.

A route planner suggests around 3 1/4 hours. I would allow a little longer just in case but you are not hitting the A69, A1 or Shields at peak times so there should be no major issues.

The roads around my home town are OK at the moment. Don't, under any circumstances go anywhere near Newcastle or Gateshead. Take the Western Bypass south & east past the Metro centre. When you get onto the A1300 in South Shields you'll need to go up to the first roundabout & come back down the same road because the crematorium is on that side of the road. There's not much parking at the crematorium & a lot of people just park outside.

If you decide to come via the A19 the Tyne Tunnel is pretty uncongested at non peak times, the road works at the North side are finished. The crematorium is only 5 minutes from the Tunnel.

The Western Bypass is the A1 still, it is what we know a section of it as up here. Sorry Mib, I didn't want William to get confused by that bit of local terminology.

Done the route many times. The only thing I'd suggest is ask the locals what it like around the Metro Centre this month. December used to be a real nightmare around there, and sitting on the A1 for a significant amount of time isn't unknown.

If the feedback is poor, consider heading north, briefly, and coming via the tunnel.

M74/Carlisle all day mate, that motorway is like a ghost town most days. The A1 past the metro centre will be fine at that time, it gets a bit sticky from 4pm onwards but it's much better since they made it 3 lanes. Worst case you'll be stuck for 10/15 minutes if traffic is bad.

Funerals tend to be midweek so at the time mentioned it wont be a problem.

Thanks again guys for the advice (y)(y)(y) just arrived home 2.75 down 2.5 hours back really Whizzed up and down M74 , no speeding of course :whistle: the A 69 wasn't too bad except for being stuck behind a few slow moving lorries. Now back home ,me and Monsieur Remy are in for a good night, expect the usual silly post later :D

An unpleasant occasion for you and a slog of a day. I'm pleased the journey was okay for you.

Welcome to the A69. I've had 31 years of driving on that, over to the NW on a regular basis. It is what it is, you learn to be patient on it. It's better than taking chances and crashing. If we had a few Whitehall civil servants driving on it to visit relatives it would be dualled in a heartbeat. As it is..................
