Hi - looking for a bit of guidance. I used to play a fair amount of golf until about 10/11 years ago when I quit to spend more time surfing & kitesurfing. Now I'm back!!
In February a friend convinced me to start playing again. He gave me a Taylormade R5 driver, a 19deg rescue & a putter - I bought myself a set of R9 TP's & 3 Cleveland wedges. I've played about 5 rounds since with scores varying between 88 & the worst 95 (in the wind today). For what it's worth, back in the day I was off 8.
So my questions: I chose the R9's cause they were on sale, 5 balls on the range proved I could now hit an 8 iron 150yds - (last time I played with my ancient clubs that would have been a 5 or 6 iron) & well, I thought they were pretty. I'm about 6ft5 & when I enquired about getting the shafts lengthed the nice man in the "golf megastore" said something like "Sure, no problem just come back & we can custom fit them for £20" - seemed fair to me & I went to the range the practice.
Straight away it was pretty apparent that while I was hitting the ball a fair distance (hence my decision not to bother with woods & get 3 wedges) my bad shot was basically a "block" straight to the right of my target, a shot I am current producing about 1 out of every 4 iron shots - clearly as a result of the clubs being to short.
I've returned the the "golf megastore" to enquire about my £20 custom fit only to be told that, sure I can buy another new set & pay £20 above the ticket price & they'll do it & they'll happilly give me £75 for my R9's. Luckily I still have my reciept from the original purchase, unluckily it doesn't have the name of the genius who sold it to me on it & now "Nobody that is there would have given me that advice". It also appears that for the cost of getting the shafts & grips I want I'm better for e-baying these & starting again.
So, (& thanks for perservering with this post) while I do really like the feel of these R9 TP's they don't appear to be available anymore, which similar clubs should I be looking at before buying again? I plan to demo them at the "golf megastore", wasting as much of their time as possible before looking to buy somewhere else.
Also, considering I been in a non-golf time capsule for the last 10 years what else do I need to know before I get stung again? What gear is worth investing in? What balls? Rule changes?
Finally, any tips for some reasonably priced courses in the Surrey area? Tried Silvermere (too slow), Traditions (too boring), Surrey National & Westerham.
