• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

So what do we think he was on?

While some of the shouts are mildly irritating, it is nice to golf being knocked off its elitist stall and the feathers of the snob brigade being ruffled no doubt. Nothing wrong with enthusiasm being shown for the game, no reason why the British polite applause is any more correct than the American wooping and cheering.

I'm all for whooping and cheering. It's the shouting of stupid things that needs getting rid of. These people still shout even if the ball is heading for the trees. I don't know how the players don't say anything.

How would you feel if after a pulled tee shot into the rough one of your playing partners said "great shot"? I imagine it to be pretty much the same feeling.

MASHED POTATO

LIGHT THE CANDLE

GET IN THE HOLE (from 650 yards)

None of that is enthusiastic, its attention seeking that they can go home and hear themselves making arses of themselves.

So our cousins in the good old usofa, deeside golf isn't tv friendly enough so line a par 3 with grandstands, let the local numpy and red necks who wouldn't know etiquette if it bit them on the arse drink cheap booze all day, announce the players onto the tee box like a second rate darts player/wrestler then encourage them to shout and ridicule the players shots then expect the player to run down the crowd throwing cheap tat and the like to the drunken nit-wits golf or americans idea of how golf should be.

And when the players were asked about this at TPC recently (asked about what they dislike about the huge crowds at these events as they were focusing on the 16th green/17th hole at Sawgrass), EVERY single one said the "get in the hole"/a.another chant was totally annoying and should be banned. Poults gave a funny answer (which escapes me now). Obviously takes a lot of restraint for these guys to not say anything.

"Stadium" golf is an entirely seperate entity. The stands around the par 3's,and crowd participation (getting drunk, and screaming at every shot) is what the tournament is known for,it may seem gimmicky, but it has the desired effect, namely attracting big names, big bucks and big crowds early in the season.
Having some doughnut scream at every shot during a major is something else entirely, and certainly not acceptable behaviour.

I don't agree with the shouting during swings and after shots are played. All very annoying.
But the "bird man?".............hahahaha!!
It's his face while he's doing it!!
Personally, I found it hilarious, and still keep chuckling every time I watch it.
Brilliant.

I don't see anything wrong with shouting after the shot has been hit - it's hardly going to affect where it goes?

But every now and then you get the guy who wants to be first to shout and the noise starts creeping in first on the follow through, then just before impact, then on impact, then on the downswing. Now think of the times you've been playing and how a cough or mobile going off during your downswing can distract and the annoyance at such as thing. You play for fun and nothing except pride is riding on that shot. Now imagine it happens on the 18th when you are needing a birdie to make a play off to give you the chance of winning £1,000,000.00

Not that it happened at the weekend but it's only a matter of time before we see it happen if more isn't done to bring these idiots under control.

Golf events under the juristiction of the USGA need to root these guys out and eject them. It will only get worse and sooner or later will affect a players swing and potentially cost them an event. I have some understanding that certain events and holes like the par 3 at the Waste Green Management/FBR/Whatever is actually a chance for fans to have some fun. Players know whats coming and for 1 hole per tournament year its not a lot to endure.

I would hope that the officials at the Open will take a firmer stance on these idiots otherwise it'll be seen as acceptable behaviour and condoned through inaction
