So what are you listening to at the moment?

From another thread where funerals were mentioned…
Yep. Dad’s is in a couple of weeks. I have three siblings. Two have already stated they wish to speak on the day. The third spoke at Mum’s so I’m assuming she’ll do the same.
I fear the worst.
I’m just picking a tune that he whistled for 5 decades, but this time played by a northern working men’s brass band. I hope he would have approved. He wouldn’t have liked unnecessary waffling about him.
This is it. Silly, but in the context it’s perfect and is making me laugh and cry simultaneously…

Still listening to Love and especially anew live album that I bought at one of the gigs I went to, also today's post brought the new album by the Bluetones, so that will be next up.

There's a lot of comments linking them to a band named Gentle Giant, but I wasn't familiar with them.
Had never heard Haken before. Listening to the song you posted, I wouldn't say it's anything like Yes. The vocal interplay is indeed similar to Gentle Giant. (If you want to sample GG, start with the album Octopus).

But the thing that bothers me about nearly all the modern "prog" bands is that they have a distinctly metal side to them (I'm not a fan of metal). The guitar sections are aggressive without being inventive. King Crimson did it properly back in the 1970s, with lots of finesse. These modern bands just thrash away.

Well I'm sure there are bands to meet all genres. Haken are progressive metal, in a similar vein to Dream Theater and stuff like that. I actually found them via asking ChatGPT for recommendations for a heavy metal band but with melodic catchy sections, and CGPT delivered. (y) I was listening to Mastodon a lot the weekend before and I wanted something similar musically but was in the mood for cleaner vocals.

The Divine Comedy.

I've been aware of a few most played of Neil Hannon's songs for many years - but not listened further. So triggered by listening to National Express and Becoming More Like Alfie I've been doing a bit of listening to his albums - and there are quite a number. His stuff is so clever and beautifully written (sometimes funny; sometimes poignant) and arranged...especially the 'orchestral' play-outs he often finishes his songs with. There are so many that are so good - but To the Rescue is a perfect example.
