So cheating...

I played with a guy who tried to give me the wrong score for a hole, he said had a par 4 but he had missed a 4 foot putt for par, I told him he had a 5 but he repeated that he had a 4 but in a much firmer way, I told him he was wrong and told him to review the hole in his head, again he said 4, so I described each of his shots back to him at which point he accepted he played 5.

I know this may not have been cheating but it felt like he knew what he was doing and had done it before.

This for me can happen and is not someone cheating, i have played with people who have done the same thing and when we have gone through the shots on the hole they have forgotten a chip out of the trees or something similar, although they have been very quick to admit their mistake each time it has happened to me i accept that it is different when someone insists and you know they are wrong which may have happened to you.

I dont play comps so cant comment on cheating in them but if its in a friendly round of golf the odd "bending" if the rules is ok by my providing its not too OTT. If a ball is lost in the woods/rough i'll often tell my playing partner to just drop it on the edge of the fairway and play on. Its not harming me and keeps up the pace.

I dont like people claiming less shots than they actually took, evem when they do the whole "air counting" to prove what shots they took.
I played with a guy who lost a ball and i told him to drop on the fairway and play on. That meant he hit the green in 4 shots and 2 putted. "thats 5 for me" he says "what about the drop after the lost ball?" "oh i count all those as free drops". Muppet!!

Absolutely agree everyone makes mistakes and that sort of thing happens a lot it was just this time it just felt different like he thought I might back down and agree.

If someone is honest then they firstly check and go through their shots as soon as you mention it, and admit straight away they made a mistake, this for me is a mistake and not cheating.

The description you gave made me think this guy was trying it on, well done to you for not backing down, as from your description he is a cheat.

Did you mention this to anyone else and or the committee?

But it could just as easily be a deliberate attempt at cheating.

When I was a member at two clubs I was playing a medal at my away club and marking the card of a committee member. Early on we had a bit of a delay on a hole while we looked for a couple of balls and when it was finished the committee man called a bogey 5. By my reckoning it was a six but I couldn't be absolutely sure. I queried it with him but he was adamant so I let it ride but made sure I wouldn't get distracted again.

Two holes later he again called a bogey and this time I absolutely knew it was a double so asked him to repeat his score. Once he confirmed it I then went through every shot with him and he had to admit he was wrong. He then had a face like thunder for the rest of the round while I felt quite pleased.

The thing is I only got to play with this guy as one of his two regular companions was missing that day. The two other guys were both vets and probably had twenty years on the committee man so just accepted the scores that he had given them in the past. I left that club not long after as the cheap subs offer came to an end but hopefully the 'cheat' learned his lesson.

Of course they aren't. However in the case of H4H and other meets I'd hope there would be a degree of respect that the day is bigger than the result and that no-one would put other forum members and organisers in such a difficult position. I personally feel (hope) there's a better shared feeling of integrity on here than perhaps in the average club.

Alas have seen cheating at a meet. They were marking their ball and then when replacing the ball was a good 1'5 to 2 inches in front of the marker.( In an Inter club match pulled up opponent for doing this last year.) Pointed it out to another member of our four ball and we agreed we'd say something in the bar after as the person was having a mare. Unfortunately we forgot in the generally melee .

I'm more curious as to who is that much more confident from 2 inches closer haha, "I can hole from 6 feet but not 6 feet 2 inches".

Everyone who's ever played with you at a meet (myself included, I even had a mare ) is now doubting themselves, guilty or not

Oh dear certainly not my intention :o For clarity it was most certainly not any one in our 4 .

They may well think it's not cheating but will now be more careful

Now that the relief is passing, im now onto intrigue....

My name is Ian Ripley (no relation) but i guess at Forest Pines you might be watching me like a hawk.

Strangely enough, Mr Ripley was suspected by some of possibly costing me some winnings at Forest Pines some years ago:mad:

Make yourself known mate and buy me a drink - I won't hold your name against you :D

No worries on the drink front, would you like ice in your water?:D

Well it turns out he didn't NR and had a 5 down on his card for the hole he was spotted cheating on.
Out of interest, what should his real score have been? Ball kicked out of rough, then hit a bit further with his club before taking his actual shot.
