Snow = No pay

The company I work for have a number of offices around the country including in the south west. We were told that if you couldn't make it in then it was a paid day. And if you could make it in then it was a free lunch and a day of in lieu as thanks. They're a nice company :-)

I work in the NHS. We expect staff to make every effort to get into work and if they are unable they can take it as annual leave or take a day unpaid. they don't simply get the day off for free.

This. Although doctors seemed to think we could magically provide rooms for them to stay over in between shifts so they didn't need to travel back home after a shift. We asked as many to get in as safely as they could, and in fairness a large proportion did, but we did have stringent contingency plans in place for a noticeable short fall. In the end, we coped reasonably well considering. HR have dealt with numerous "Why do I have to take leave/unpaid leave" queries and some did think they'd get a freebie
