Not sure if this has been discussed before but what are people's views on fellow golfers smoking whilst they wait for you to tee off??

I've nothing against people smoking whilst playing but recently its happened to me twice while teeing off. Not sure if my annoyance was because the smoke affected my shot which spooned out of bounds!!!

In what way does it affect your shot: smoke billowing over to the teeing area, the sound of lighters sparking?

A couple of my playing partners have the odd fag and it doesn't bother me too much. If it does, say my asthma is playing up, I tell them and they move. Also, they never spark up when I'm playing a shot.

Been done to death mate. Funny thougth how something that is legal is concidered such a problem.(could just be your bad driving)

Think its only a problem when your waiting to play your shot as a non smoker maybe (and yes could be my bad driving too Dave)

Not sure how it affects you in this case.... If the smoke is blowing towards you, then I suppose that's fairly bad manners anywhere, irrespective of on the golf course.

I have no issues with people smoking on the course as long as they bin the fag ends, rather than leaving them on the course.

Yes Monty I think its just the manners really.

I am a smoker, I smoke alot on the course, maybe one ever other hole/ one ever third hole. I have smoked for twenty three years and am aware of how unacceptable it is these days. I would never flick my lighter once my partners were in the pre shot phase and am always aware of where the wind is blowing.

I think the issue is awareness of other....

Some of the guys I play with smoke whilst they play their shot. I cannot for the life of me how you can swing a club properly with a cigarette hanging out of your mouth, although my mate says he always knows when he's completed his backswing due to the burn hole in his shoulder

Hate to admit it but i smoke. Have done for too many years. Try to keep it down a bit though.

Whenever i light up i always try to do it away from other people out of politeness and courtesy really.
I have noticed lately that when i have a smoke it does affect my game for a bit so i try not to smoke out on the course much now.

Played with a guy a few months back in a competition and i don't think he had a moment without one in his mouth for the whole round, even while he was playing his shot. I was gobsmacked i must admit.

Yep, I swing a club while I smoke in the garden of an evening and if you keep to a proper shot with your head down you will always burn or put the fag out...

I have never smoked in my life. Having watched my mother smoke herself to death and my best friend die of lung cancer at the age of 49, you may understand I am vehemently anti smoking.

Smokers by nature are inconsiderate and selfish. They refuse face up to the mass of evidence against passive smoking. They only cite their own rights and freedom of choice and completely ignore the rights of others to go where and when they like without suffering secondhand smoke.

The golf course is no safe haven from the inconsiderate smoker. If he needs to attend to his addiction, then at least have some thought for others. At least light up downwind and consider your fellow players. Then I won’t have a problem , it's just him with the problem

I will guarantee if you ask 100 smokers if they considerate smokers, 100 will say they are. Well perhaps they are just thoughtless

You take that long to tee off? :D

Unless smoke actually gets into your eyes/comes across your view forget it. If it does, then ask them to stand behind you and re-set. Another possibility is to think of the damage it's doing there lungs every inhalation! Though, even being an anti-smoker, I'd be in with the rioters if it ever got banned on a golf course!

I smoked a lot on the course, I'd have one for a good shot and one for a .....you guessed it.

I always was aware if the smoke blew near a fellow player. I gave up 4 months ago cold turkey and my golf better improve this season lol

P.S what about the playing partners who've eaten half of India or raw garlic the night before, they never once stood downwind of me.......inconsiderate sods:whistle:

I gave up smoking 4 years ago, but i did smoke during games and only ever lit up when walking away from the tee. I always stubbed my ciggie out on my buggy wheel and put it in the bin at the next tee, when playing a shot i never ever had the ciggie in my mouth as the card holder on my buggy will testify as there is still the burn marks from the ciggie. I do not have a problem with anyone smoking on the course as long as the dispose of the butt properly.
