Smoking in Cars with Chidren is now Illegal ..but

I think it's a good law and one that the Police will use their discretion over.

Smokers that disagree with it in my view are being very selfish. A child does not have the option to choose at a young age and can only sit there and inhale the impurities of cigarette smoke.

About time to.

One memory that lingers with me from childhood was the Sunday afternoon outing crammed into the Moggy 1000 with Dad and Gran puffing away in the front and the rest of us in the back not having a clue where we were going as we couldn't see a thing through the smoke.

Good.

Now they need to clamp down on parents that have an alcoholic drink whilst in charge of their kids as well. Childrens health and well-being should be of the utmost importance and so many parents think it's acceptable to drink alcohol whilst they have children dependent on their full, virtuous and uncontaminated care and attention.

I mean, if one pint of ale renders you incapable of being in full control of a vehicle then how the hell can you be deemed capable of being in charge of children!!

I've always thought its crazy how the police have arrested people for drinking a can of pop or eating a chocolate bar whilst driving but its perfectly legal to have something on fire between your fingers????????

I don't smoke, but If I did the police would never know if I was smoking in a car with kids because they'd never be able to see in the back of my car due to the tinted windows!

Utterly pointless law (well intended but pointless nonetheless) that will have as much effect as the on the spot fines for using your mobile which hasnt deterred anyone from what I see during my daily 120 mile round trip commute.

The police are just too overstretched to process the resultant paperwork arising from the on the spot fines.

and it doesnt apply to convertibles,as its not a confined space.aslong as the roofs down.

think its a good idea in essence, but when they bought in the no smoking in the work place poor sods were getting done for smoking in there own vans(sole traders)now look round and see how many peeps smoke in company cars and trucks.

but yet another blow for the motorist, easy targets and a cash cow.cannot see how they can manage to have the man power to deal with this, when it apprantly takes an age to get them out if needed.

now theyve put the age up for e cigs aswel, think theyve been lent on by the tobacco companys?.and how on earth are they going to police it when someone is vaping?.

Me too. Seems to end up on the floor more often than not also.

I asked my doctor how it has been determined that people are living longer. He said that it is evidenced by so many people now living into their 80s and 90s.

I remarked that this was rather contradictory to other data, as these people were of a generation that probably smoked from the age of 12, lived in smoke filled environments as children, went into smoke filled pubs as adults and in smoke filled restaurants, cinema's, offices etc.
Those people had been through a war where cigarettes were freely distributed to services personnel and were cheap to buy and helped them through the blitz.

He didn't have an answer.

Please fine lard arses for being in the car with their kids - or on a long haul next to me - far more dangerous to health! ;)

If a PC sees someone under the age of 18 smoking, he's supposed to confiscate the cigs.

Under what law? Mistaken there I think. Confiscation is under 16.

Back on track, it will be indeed difficult to police, and as said by others, the initial period will be a grace period. This law is a concience prodder which will work on most but there will always be the numpties, as with seat belt and mobile phone legislation.

Plod round here can't even see the knobs driving along with a phone to their ear, so how they going to notice a toddler in the back seat????
Saw somebody yesterday driving a Nissan Juke with her phone to her ear...the bloody thing has built in bluetooth!!

My whole family smoked in every place I was when I was a boy. I mean everywhere. It did my nut in that no one did anything about it. Now I have asthma. Could be unrelated but difficult to prove. I'm glad this has come in. It's hard enough to breathe in vastly over populated cities without people blowing smoke in your face.

I'd see a different reaction If I wanted to fart everywhere I went.

They'll be ok to smoke in a VW, I'd imagine the emissions there will be harmless.

:)

Good point, however we simply have better drugs to keep people going.

Clearly I need to go to jail as I smoke in the car when my kids are also in the car. As a smoker I am addicted to the habit and when we are driving at snails pace along the M25 I will often wind down the window and have a ciggy.... it's that or stab someone!!

I applaud the new law and already avoid smoking as much as I can possibly resist. The less young people SEE people smoking the less likely they are to start themselves, it's nothing to do with the health of the child in the actual car (in my opin).

So I've moved all the ashtrays out of the car and put 'em into the kids bedrooms.....!!

It's a nice idea but can't see how the police can monitor it and seems unworkable

It's not going to be fully enforced due to lack of man power.

It is supposed to make people think and hopefully looks and comments from those in society will reduce the number of people doing it.
