All well and good but you’re in the States and Billy the Burglar rings the door bell at 9am; are you getting up between 1am and 5am depending on where you are to put him off? Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for keeping the theiving scum out but I’d have serious reservations about a Ring door bell unless there is someone available 24/7 to answer it. Went for a decent alarm but not sure that the Ring door bells aren’t a little overrated.

Does the ring doorbell system record 24/7 or just when pressed. If so, nit sure it’ll take said scum too long to start knocking doors instead.

They record when pressed or when the sensors are activated by movement

I agree, however I work on the theory that to avoid your house being broken into make it that much more of a ball ache than next door

Cctv
Alarm
Lighting timers
Spikes on fences
Warning signs etc

Prob why next door is only house that’s been done over in 4 years (done 2 weeks back) no security

Spikes on fences

Careful on that one. I was advised by the police that if I had something like that on the top of a fence or wall I could in theory be done if some scroat hurts himself trying to climb over. Best deterrent was a dog, and dog warning signs on the doorways to cover your back:)

Personally, I think all the new WiFi stuff we are using as “security” is just another entrance for tech savvy burglars. They have already had people messing with boiler controls having hacked into the WiFi, and if they can get into the US security systems they can get past your password.
Old school physical barriers for me, suplimented by a decent and visible cctv system. Of course, if you can also have a four legged man trap even better;)

Have got the Hive system for the heating and a hive plug for a lamp which comes on at dusk. Did buy the hive internal camera to keep an eye on the dogs, but the wife and daughter hated it as it was an invasion of privacy apparently! Got so much grief I ended up punting it.

That's my concern about all this tech too.

On the one hand, all this automation will trick simple burglars into not bothering or catch them if they do bother, on the other side there will be a new breed of tech-savvy criminals, who hack the devices and just monitor them until the patterns emerge that show the householders are on holiday - eg heating pattern changes, no signals sent from Alexa or equivalent.

I've got the Blink motion detector cameras, 2 outside and 1 inside. They just record video and store it in the cloud when they detect motion and you can schedule when they are armed or not so you don't get disturbed if you don't want to. Had them 6 months and quite impressed. Also have amazon echo that we mostly use to play music on.

Burglars by trade are lazy opportunists, just make your house look more secure than your neighbours.....On a more serious note it can depend on where you live. The closest manned cop shop from us is 15 miles so they can enter a new estate by the A1,try their luck with a few garage doors and windows and by the time any response is made they are back on the A1 heading the other way with your flatscreen waving at the cop car in other lane heading to the scene of the crime.....

Your Burglars are very polite in the south, up north they tend not to inform the occupants they’re breaking in.;)

Alexa has away mode in the USA and is coming to the uk
Randomly sets your lights at diff times of the day so there isn’t a routine or pattern

That’s smart

I am not ready to look into yet but apparently you can set up to listen for sound of an alarm going (my alarm for example) and can set all the lights to flash red which disorientates them and people outside are like wow what a funky disco

And that is born out bby the growth inelectronics code grabbers to read your wireless key code so they can steal your car quietly, without any fuss or mess. The rapid growth in home wifi will bring with it a comensurate growth in wifi readers for hackers to use to unlock your house and roll out the welcome mat for them.
If somehting is a slight buggerance for me, its a damn sight more of a buggerance for a potential burgler or thief.
The more information being sent out from your house the more infornmation people can know about your life, habbits and actions.
You might be able to tell that I have no interest for the multitude of home wifi gadgets ready to leak my life to the rest of the World.

Got a few Echo dots in the house, couple of plugs and a few bulbs.

The bulbs are really useful, set so the lights are on when I get home from work and to come on for a bit at various times of the day. From a security point of view, it is also nice to be able to flip lights on and off from my phone when on holiday. Also good to be able to turn the bathroom light on from my phone in the middle of the night so as i am not fumbling around in the dark.

The alexa is mainly used for radio and music, always nice when you have people round to just let them tell alexa what music they want on in the background (linked to amazon prime music).

Picked all of the alexas up cheap in amazon sales so not expensive.

If you cover your roof in tin foil they can’t access your info 😚

Nice one! Verily did you make me chortle...(y)

But lets be honest, burglars want to know how often you access Spotify:ROFLMAO:

lol they can know all the convos in my house for all I care .. I look forward to the random adverts tailored to me considering half the week either my parents or my wife’s parents are over looking after the little lady

Or I could just talk non stop about golf until it spams my wife’s email

I’m confused by this, they hack your WiFi? That would only give them access to the internet connection and possibly they could see the devices on the network but I’m not really sure if they actually could. They would then have to hack the device which is already on an encrypted network to gain access to the settings. All for my 10 year old 37” tv and Xbox. Good luck with that 😂.
I’m sure it could be done but they’d surely only be targeting the ultra rich.

Most hubs have built in WiFi anyways not that it’s 100% fail safe ofc

Then even if they hacked your devices still protected by a password stored not on the device

I have a wifi thermostat, and 3 wifi timers for some lighting.

I am going to need another wifi timer for my beach apartment fairly soon. This is probably the most practical, as I will want to control the heating remotely.
