Had a guest over from Japan at the weekend and took him for a round of golf at mine. I knew it was the monthly medal in the morning, but we went out about 14:10 after the medal had gone. There was a 4 ball in front of us, we were a 3 ball. The sign of things to come started on the first. We waited until they'd played their second shots and moved on before teeing off, as we walked to our balls for the second shot we could see that the fourball in front hadn't even made the green, we then had to wait for 5+ mins before they putted out every shot and moved on. We played in, finished the hole and walked through to the 2nd tee(par 3) to find that none of them were on the green, another 5 + minute wait. And so it continued. They were playing every shot, every putt and hunting every ball in the woods. I'm fine with this if they are playing in comp, but by the 4th hole they's already lost a hole on the group in front. It continued, every shot we were kept waiting, whilst they were looking for balls, it became very frustrating and they didn't once look back to call us through. By the 10th they were over two holes back on the next group. Initially we thought they were playing in the medal, but after a while we noticed them pick up on a couple of putts. We were able to touch base with them at 14 and asked them to step up the pace. At that point, the sky started to get dark and angry and eventually started raining at 16, at which point they picked up and walked off..... We played 17 but it was just nasty, thunder and lightning, so we had to give up too. Was so disappointed, I'd shot 36 on the back nine to the end of 17 and was having a great game, despite the lengthy waits every shot. When we got in, turns out we'd taken almost 4.5 hours to then. Which, in the scheme of things wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be but if they had had the courtesy to play us through anywhere between 4 and 15, we'd have finished about 30 mins before them, before the rain with a complete round. Just frustrated at the lack of manners....

I agree with Whee. Nice one, try and get it to whistle past their ear as well. Dont forget to say sorry though, even if it is tounge in cheek lol.

This sort of thing has to be brought up woth the pro... but in the right way. A simple suggestion or reminder about ettiquette should do the trick.

There isn't a swear word that exists to describe these sort of golfers - every club has them. It's not so much that the majority of them are down right sh*te at playing golf, its the total ignorance that goes along with it not letting quicker groups play through thus spoiling the round. This is the Nr 1 thing that f*cks me off the most on the golf course - just reading this post is pushing the blood pressure through the roof - going to sit in a darkened room for a while to calm down.

yeah i too agree with whee , put the ball up near them of past there heads and shout "four" then opss sorry .

If someone put a ball past my head from behind it would be disappearing into the nearest hazard sharpish......I will never understand how hitting a ball into the group in front would speed them up....

.......and it's 'fore' BTW

I had similar at the weekend, 3 groups in front of me mainly consisting of scratch team members. Each hadextensive pre-shot routines and were crawling round the greens on their knees looking at putts from every angle. There was never a hint of 'I'm ready so I'll play my shot' and even tap in putts were being marked. I know that far more care has to be taken when you no shots to use but there are limits. We were a 2 ball behind 3 balls and not once was it ever even suggested that we play through (in fact one of the worst culprits in the group in front actually said to us 'looks like it will be slow today'. Yes, because of you).

Shows it is not just the higher handicappers who can hold up a course.

I hope that the suggestion of hitting through the group in front is just a joke as I don't think I could live with myself if I hit one and took his eye out or maybe killed him for the sake of and extra half an hour!

longest round we ever had was 6.5 hours on the Lyndoch Course at Murrayshall!! There was a society out around 4 tee times before us and they held up the whole course. People started walking off after 12 to 14 holes as it was ridiculous.

And it's also "their" btw...

We (3-ball) were pretty slow as well yesterday but nobody was behind us. Still a 4.5 hours round is too long for me.

Longest Round ever for me. GM Centenary Meet at Dalmahoy this year. 5 hours 30 minutes. When we returned at 5.10 p.m ALL the food had gone!

The guys that I played with made up for the disaster

Longest rounds I had were my 2 at the Belfry with GM. To be honest I was no where near up to a standard to be playing on The Brabazon (or the PGA to be honest) and I was not alone in that. Luckily I was the last group out so was not holding any else up.

Should have fired a drive up their asses pal, that would have done the job subtly!

You mentioned it to your club?

Please tell me this is tongue in cheek ? Slow play is very annoying and frustrating, but being hit on the fly 200 yards down the fairway with a golf ball is a lot worse !!

Why not just have a word and tell them to get a move on !!!

You guys are so right - terrible behaviour

The knack is to make sure the ball is bouncing when it runs into them ;)
