Slow play.

4-4.5 hours would seem to be the norm around our course on a Sunday, but you can't really accuse anyone of playing slowly as no-one is falling a hole behind. Course just is really busy with many more people on it than other days. Today the course was quiet due to the rain and we made it round in about 3.5 hours having called one 3 ball through as they were obviously a lot better and quicker than us. Then one of them promptly sticks his next ball in the thick stuff and takes near the 5 mins to find it.
 
Four hours is the norm at my place but every course is different and if everyone is playing to that pace then I don't see an issue. It may be sour grapes as you are playing well butI think you need to get to the bottom of it one way or another as it'll eat away and you won't enjoy the game irrespective of how well you play.
 
I played with you at Lefties gaff last year and don't remember you being particularly slow.
You took a little longer than the rest of us to get the ball off the tee, but not to the extent of it becoming annoying, and the end result was one of the best displays of driving I've seen, so keep it up!
I've played with slow players, one in particular...Bob Eagle.
Never ready to tee off, he could be last to play and by the time it was his turn his bloody club would still be in the bag with the headcover on.
10 yards short/long of the 150 marker post and he would then wait for us all to play our approach shots and pace it out!
Little things that he used to do would all add up and make our rounds at least half an hour longer than they should have been and in the end we wouldn't let him go out in the first group anymore because he would hold the whole meeting up.
If you were like that, I would tell you, because you deserve a kick up the arse.
But you're not

I didn't find you slow at the London club. Not noticeably so any way.

Does this mean when we play the Redlibbets day we need to bring a torch so we can still get round?

I dont think as myself as being slow, but yesterday I went out in a 4ball, nobody else booked for an hour after us. Lo and behold 2 women appeared behind us. Now we all know women are bloody slow when we get stuck benimd them. Oh no, not these 2. I think they had rollerskates on. I thought to myself, what the hell are they running round for, it's a lovely day and all they can see is MEN on the course. We eventually gained a good distance from them. Unbeleivable.

In answer to ur question, If 3? guys said I was slow, I would want names. If no names, I would play even slower just to wind them up even more. If they havent got the balls to say to ur face, their not worth worrying about..........

I remember my old club when I was a junior, short of members, longest wait on the 1st to tee off was 1 group and usually a hole or two between groups! I thought this was how all golf was played, I could go out as a single and not catch up to the three ball who teed off a while before me! Rounds there were very quick indeed! I am sure I remember going round in a little over 3 plenty of times on my own, that is with no handicap, nothing that compares to a swing and playing with onions and potatoes.

My new club, OK near 11 years later, is in the middle of overpopulated south Hampshire. Every peak time there are a minimum of two groups on the first tee and almost every tee time is booked with a 4 ball. Rounds here can go on for about 4 and a half hours or more (longest so far is a little over 5 and a half)!
 
After 12 years I have recently changed my Club - the main reason was because of slow play. It is becoming a real issue everywhere and so many people ARE slow but will not admit to it.

I am not accusing anyone on this page, I am just adding to the conversation.

If everyone was as interested and keen to not spoil the game for the group behind them and ensure they keep up with the game in front - no-one could complain. Unfortuneatly not everybody does this (in my experience).

I also don't think it helps that the professional game now sets a standard which is very slow.

Anyway, I have left my Club now and joined a new one and am glad to report things are a lot better. My new Club is so much better with everyone working hard to play at a reasonable pace and not make lengthy rounds the norm.
 
Four and a half hours, that's bloody slow. I last years Ross-shire County Championship it took 5 1/2 hours to play 36 holes and have lunch in-between, we were only a two ball though :D
 
I have to say AW that when we played as a 4 ball at your gaff, I was very aware how painfully slow I thought we were. Whether it was you, me, JustOne, Bratty, a combination, or just having such a good time with the chat and banter, I know not. I know that we were in no hurry and wanted to smell the roses but I think that we let at least 2, maybe 3, groups through which probably added another 20/30 minutes to our round. To be fair though, they were 3 balls.

As Smiffy rightly said, one of the main causes of slow play is people not being ready to play when it's their turn. The golfer who stands by the one about to play his shot rather than moving up towards his own ball, then spends ages thinking what to do followed by a lengthy pre-shot routine, the "pacer" (buy a SC ffs), the putter who watches everyone else putt instead of assessing his own shot while waiting.

Just think, take a 4 ball each averaging say 85 shots in the round, if each golfer could take just 20 seconds less per shot by speeding up any of the above, then the round could be about 1 to 1 1/2 hours quicker (allowing less time for the second and 3rd putts :o)
 
personally i love playing with slow players....

...by the time we get to the 3rd or 4th its done my head in

and ive stuck my sand wedge in their skull & buried them in the bunker on the 5th

but seriously,
as a fast player (1st club ,juniors had no standing had to call anyone waiting through...even though it was always juniors at our club that were waiting on the old duffers) i hated playing in slower rounds...it really got to me and affected my game (killed me in alot of tourneys) i cope better now -...read 1st bit at the top again ;)

yes there are slow players some of which goes down to players over thinking or showing off his new R23 driver (sorry just future proofing...well til june 2011 when the r24 comes out)...or trying new pre shot/set up routines ....you know, one of those new ideas those golf magazines will print

or like my friend did first time out even tho we had ppl up our backsides he'd have a smoke b4 hitting a shot, 2 of us had hit and he was still trying to find his lighter in his bag then proceeded to carry on smoking even tho it was his shot and we'd told him "c'mon hurry up take your shot" and he'd carry n with another 2 or 3 drags
(needless to say my friend or I wont be going round with him again )...

but he does live in his own little ***-world (*** =his name..removed just in case ;) ) & thought it was just relax take it easy and amble round think we were lucky had to let 3 or 4 group through but we had a late morning tee-time and ppl too busy lunching to go out at that time

but tbh most of its just being held up by waiting for the people in front
some of its just down to slightly poorer course design creating bottlenecks

even if anyone is slow as long as they remember etiquette and let ppl through at the first opportunity

p.s.

or could just look in the car park to see how many Audi's or BMW's are there (you know how selfish they are on the road,just the same on the course :p
 
I agree with the above leftie 100%, but in all fairness as justone pointed out if he is taking longer over the ball on the tee, but is hitting every fairway and not the cabbage then surely 20 seconds longer on all 18 tee's is only 6 minutes eztra per round, that can be taken up looking for one ball.

Looking at AW's handicap at less than 10 he obvioulsy has a solid game, and a percentage of that has to come from assessing putts, or even over assessing them & of course pre shot routine. Would i rather my rounds be 15 mins longer and i have 5 less putts on the card, dam right i would.

AW, providing like others have mentioned you have done your thinking and are ready for your pre shot routine and shot when its your go, stick both fingers up at them. You have paid you fee's, and your entitled to enjoy your game. If your enjoyment comes from assessing your shot, providing you are getting the results you aim for, then its time invested, if however you are taking 10 mins extra a round and hitting no fairways or greens in regulation, then pull ya finger out ;)

Ah, that was me feckin' about all the time and laughing with Bratty most of it :)

We were just guys out playing as mates and we didn't hold anyone up. It would be entirely different if it was a medal though.... you wouldn't be able to keep up Roger ;)
 
I was about to say that with your handicap there should be few wayward shots requiring time spent searching, fewer shots hit and fewer shots on the putting greens - all saving a lot of time for your group BUT one of my playing pals, off 4ish, is the slowest we play with!

The areas mentioned above, not ready to play, bag left on wrong side of green and as one would expect from a very low handicapper, his set up time on the tee- over a putt- hearing a cough from three fairways away - his pacing forward to work out his landing area .....all combine to make him a slower player despite him playing less shots than his playing partners.

However to the OP...you must find out who has named you and WHY - this will then allow a way forward as this thread will not help your situation within your group. You may get confirmation from the players here that you are not a slow player but the next time you join up with your group your head will not be on golf when you stand on the first tee.

Get it sorted - best for you and them!

Not being funny James. You know me better than that.
But don't you think having to let through 3 other matches (albeit 3 balls) indicated that you were a "little" (teeny weeny) bit slow?

I would like to make it clear that my comments about the main reasons for slow play were not in any way directed at any member of our group that day. They were observations made from many, many years of watching tooth grindingly slow players.

We were just having a good time.
