slow day so - how would you tackle this hole?

8 pars out of 49 players?!?!?

Jeez.....nice way to start the round!

Driver every time for me, worst case would be my natural driver fade ends up in the lateral hazard (I assume that's what's down the right) and I have to drop out, I'm still only playing three to the green from hopefully around 130 yards.

Talking of tough openers, ours is a brute. Sunday's Stableford qualifier saw an entry of 114, there were 10 pars and one birdie (a very rare bird on this hole). The remaining scores were 36 bogeys and 67 doubles or worse.
Par 5, average score 6.75 and it was second toughest hole on the day.

Not confident enough with my long clubs at the moment to try and carry the water (I'd need 3 wood to hit 190 anyway), so smooth hybrid short, then either another hybrid to try and get it as close as possible or a mid iron to leave 50/60 yards.

I'd certainly be played for a 5.

It's pretty flat, a few humps and bumps ut generally flat.
The problem with it is that's it's the first shot of the day and we don't have muvh in the way of warm-up facilities.
If this was the 12th hole then most would lash it with the driver or 3 wood without any 2nd thoughts.

I'll often lay-up. I can reach with the 2nd shot or get around the green for a chip'n'putt par.
But the last 4 times I've played it I've creamed a 3 wood to leave about an 8 iron in and parred each time.
Psycologically, it's a bitch as it's the first but as long as you're straight you're ok. The carry over the ditch varies from 150 to 210 depending on where the tee is on the teebox.
Going up 18 isn't really viable - those trees are a bit bigger and denser than they look. You have to guess the line - get it wrong there and you're in the clag again......
Good hole.

Driver for me, at the tree line with a fade... I'll take my chances for an up 'n down if I perchance fade into the ditch on the right.

Judging by the medal scoring it looks like one of the toughest opening holes in golf!!! :D

326 off the reds - so its only 120 for me to carry - so i'll pop my drive over onto the second fairway. Normally drive about 180/200 depending on wind -so that leaves me a 6 iron or 8 iron to the green, two putts and a par.

;)

It is normally into the prevailing wind, and it often howls down, I did drive it yesterday, coz the yellows were near the front and there was no wind, made it over by 20 feet, Today i landed in the ditch,

Off the whites in a comp i will always lay up short of the ditch, and happy to walk off with a 5 for 2, now I only get one shot there

It certainly makes you think

Fragger

3 wood or driver all day for me. We've a similar hole that comes way too early. Our 3rd has a 189 yard carry over an environmental area (automatic lost ball and off to the drop zone). You've not really got loose. It ALWAYS plays into the wind and so can be a brute to carry in winter and its pretty much driver to then get enough distance to leave a mid iron in. A lot of people get intimidated but the carry. I just focus on the line of bunkers left trust my swing and hit it. A good conduct and I'm over. Too quick or a ropey swing and I'm dropping. I never worry what has gone before on this one but carry scars on other holes. Weird

Have played this hole many times, always a 3 wood down the right with draw and sometimes a driver if I feel confident enough !if you get the drive away it is nice and easy :)

Without seeing the hole first hand, to me it looks as if you slice your first shot you're in the ditch. If you over draw or hook it you're in the ditch. If you don't go over or over cook your drive you can end up in the ditch.

With a stroke inex of 5 and being the first hole in a competition unless you're a single figure handicap player I would lay up every time using a 5 or 6 iron off the tee. This would give me aprox 215 -225 yds to the hole which is a nice 7 iron followed by a gap wedge which would hopefully leave me a two put at most giving me a par or 1 over which in a competition is a good result on the first hole when you are still warming up.

Anything more than 1 over on the first in a competition wouldn't be a good start and most players could take the 1 against their handicap in the full knowledge that the players who go for it could wreck their cards before getting to the second. Physcologically that would put you in a very strong position to start your round with.

After 90% of you suggested going over the ditch I gave it a shot today.

Luckily the northerly wind made the decision alot easier :)

Hit a nice draw of the bridge leaving 135 from the rough on the left. 9 iron to the green and 3 putts for a 5! :)

So I walked off a bit peeved, even though I am normally happy with a 5. Shows how greedy we are eh? never happy.

Easy! Driver out over the 150 marker, ball drawing back in with my normal 340 yard carry, pitch to flag leaving 3 foot putt for birdie.
I can do this on almost any hole, till somebody wakes me up.:D

Probably a 7i lay-up before the ditch, 5 wood onto the 2nd part of the fairway followed by a chip onto the green and hopefuly 1 or 2 putt. That is assuming I don't cock anything up and can string a good tee shot & 2nd shot together. To be honest I'd rip your hand off for a 5 and would be pleased with a 6. Actually I'd just be happy to be playing with the same ball by the time I reached the green.
