Finally taken the plunge and bought the skycaddie 2.5 (could not justify the extra £130 for colour and a bigger screen) and what a piece of kit.

Just been to my local muni which I haven't played for a while and used it for the first time. The confidence it gives in knowing you have the right club in your hands is amazing and allows full commitment on the shots.

The scary thing is now knowing how far you hit the ball (not as far as I thought!!!), which I find is a great help as if the ball was in the rough, I set the mark feature on and more or less walked up to the ball without spending hardly anytime looking for it.

Skycaddie is a must for all golfers

I am going to have to have a closer look at these things, maybe I could become a convert, if it gives greater confidence then that is a positive and I am always one for looking at things that have apositive benefit and so many people keep talking about the confidence they give so I am just gonna have to find out for myself. I'll see if I can borrow one soon as........but I will also have to get over the hurdle of thinking it too much of an aid. But I will have a look.

I bought the colour one but it gives the same info. I wouldn't be without it now, after only 4 weeks use. It just makes life so much easier.

Tbh, it doesn't provide that much more info than a scoresaver (that in an ideal world you have annotated with a bit more detail), but it just makes it so much quicker.

I have found the confidence is a great thing, especially with the pin at the back. Knowing how far to hit to run out of green is really useful when firing at a back pin placement.

The downside is knowing how far you drive. Or rather, how far you don't drive.

A mate of mine hit 264 this morning. This is by far the longest drive I have measured on it to date.

Had a good 'battle of the drives' yesterday. I lost by two yards. D*mn. 238 to 240. At least I won 11 skins. Some compensation.

These are great bits of kit.Have not got 1 but have used it and would say that they will be hugely popular within the next 1-3 years.A guy from our County Exec was speaking at a dinner I was at last night and he was saying that the R&A have now made them 100 percent legal to be used and so you do not need permission from your club to use them in comps anymore, the only ones you can't use are the ones that give you elevation readings.

Good to see on the post from Bazlambo that it has made him relise how far he really does hit the ball something which gets my back up bigtime on here with guys claiming they hit it 280 yards plus regular!

Herb, at our level we need all the help we can get with the latest technology that is used in irons and drivers etc, one of my biggest failings was in judging distances so this has now ben addressed as well. All I need now are grandstands to stop the thin and spectators to trample down the grass!!!

The length was a surprise, not so much on the driver as I don't consider myself a long hitter anyway, but more on the irons as I thought I was about 5-10yds longer on them than I was actually hitting. Only bunked on tonight, played 5 holes and was GIR on 4 of them, the 3 distances given for the green is a massive help with me clubbing for the middle one, so if underhit/overhit should make the green the still, can't wait to play a full round and aim over hazards with confidence rather than erring on the side of caution, not fully committing for fear and racking up big scores on holes

Not according to Rule 14-3 but I think your man is on the right track for next season with making things clearer about their use....

Tony - went to Brackenwood and went again tonight for an hour for a further play. Again out of 5 holes played hit 4 greens in reg (only a par 3 let me down), complete confidence that I have the right club in my hands when hitting the shot.

Got mine from AG for £152 after they price matched a 10% discount I can get off AG website for being a BT broadband cust, and also got free leather pouch and in car charger

Bought a 2.5 yesterday, can't wait to try it out. The pro said he would take one of these over a rangefinder any day of the week, so that made my mind up. Like a kid at Christmas now, time to find out if I really do carry the ball 270 off the tee!

Nearly but not quite......from pga.info:

'The English Golf Union (EGU) has followed the pioneering decision of the PGA by taking the decision to allow Distance-Measuring Devices (DMD) to be used in all its championships in 2009.

The PGA were the first major golfing body to sanction the use of GPS measuring devices, announcing the decision at the start of the year for their use in all national and regional events.

Now the EGU's Board of Directors agreed the move following the recommendation of the Championship Committee at its recent meeting at Woodhall Spa and the change will be written into the conditions of each of next year's events.

EGU Officials have contacted the R&A and the other Home Unions to inform them of the move.

Only DMDs that calculate distance will be permitted. Those providing other information such as wind speed, temperature and elevation, will not be allowed. Any player found using such a DMD will be in breach of Rule 14-3 for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional function is actually used.'
