Hi a friend of mine as offered me a sky caddie sg5 for £40 but it is not registered and the back light is not working. Is it worth buying and can you get the light fixed and how much?

What back light?

I have this unit and have never used a 'back light '

I have had the sg5 for about 5 years and the back light hardly ever comes on (mine is on auto). If you need the light to see the screen then it is probably too dark for golf anyway. The screen is brilliant without the light in the brightest of sunshine. Considering that they were £300 brand new £40 is probably a bargain if you are happy to pay the subscription fees. The battery on mine has also been good (still the original) and gets me round the course 3 times easily between charges (based on 4 hour rounds).

Remember that its an annual fee and they'll skin you of £30 again next year. If you don't pay, then it doesn't do much for you at all.

There may well be better options available nowadays with no annual fee involved that cost little more than this 'bargain'

Yes there are lots of options out there, whether their better or not depends on how much you want an up to date accurate device that shows the 300+ course updates that have been done in the last 3mths!

As for "they'll skin you", personally and professionally I think all "other" brands are skinning everyone knowing that their all singing and dancing devices are not up to date with the considerable amount of course changes that have taken place and don't tell those customers they have NO control on when they'll be updated, why spend hundreds of pounds on something that's out of date from day 1?

And yes, I work for SkyCaddie but the above is a truthful statement of facts.

I paid about 70/80 for my skycaddie aire with no subscription fees for the life of the product. Not as complex a bit of kit, but good enough for my needs (paired with a nikon coolshot.) bought to replace my sg2.5, which is also available at a 'bargain' price...

The other brand devices may not be up to date, but, at least they work. If you don't renew the annual fee, how much of the skycaddy sg5 works, up to date or not ;)

Its a membership required device, if you don't want to renew simply sell it on and invest in a SkyCaddie device that doesn't require membership but can be opted in & out to access extra features but still be guaranteed all course details are correct and up to date :D

I had one and the "back light" packed in as well, a fault known to skycaddie, which for £60 they will repair, with it not working you might find it hard to view out on the course, I found it very hard to see so now have got the sgx.
