SkyCaddie or Skylogix?

After seeing Murphthemogs GPS unit in action the other week I am seriously tempted to dip my toe into the GPS pool.
I know a lot of people are using SkyCaddie, but an internet search threw up the "SkyLogix" alternative which promises to be easier to use (apparantly there are no buttons to press???)

http://www.golfgps.com/default.aspx

Advantages/disadvantages of each system?

The SkyCaddie 2.5 can be had for a little cheaper, but the Skylogix appears to have a much bigger LCD screen (which could be useful for my blind as a bat eyesight!)
The Skylogix comes with one free downloadable course as standard and costs £29.95 a year with unlimited downloads
Thanks
Rob

Going to be the SG2.5 when funds allow. Looked at the SKylogix site and they don't have either of my local courses.

Skycaddie are unquestionably the market leaders, with them you know what you are getting (as echoed by all forum members who use one) and therfore the 2.5 would be your best bet. I have one and love it- if ease of use is your worry forget it- you would have to be really inept with technology to not be able to work it. Put differently anyone that can access the internet to come on this forum can use a skycaddie.

Just got my Skycaddie last week (2.5) and would love to submit a glowing report, but unfortunately course has been frozen for 4 weeks and I have not hit a ball on temp greens this year.

But after all my research it was Skycadie I was most impressed with. Their method of mapping the courses swung it for me.

I agree that Skycaddie is probably the market leader but if I were in the market (not cos I use Win Mobile with scoring) I would certainly go for Caddy aid - I think their concept is better in my view.

This could be what swings it for me too. The fact that the terrain is done using a man on the ground and not an eye in the sky IMO, gives the advantage. I like the idea of the moving green with the SC.

The only other one I am holding out on is the model VIG has just purchased the sonocaddie V300, but at about £250 that is SG5 territory and that looks mighty hard to beat.

The sonocaddie has the ability to record all types of stats and actually edit courses you have downloaded, adding or removing hazards, marking layup distances(i think) and there is no annual subscription.

So its these 2 for me, I would need to use both to decide, and before I get the chance, I will be keeping my well earned in the bank.

I think GM should do a full review of the top 5 GPS's for one of the up and coming mags. Lets get this sorted once and for all!

I would offer my services as cheif tester but I noticed in the same month I tested the Yonex cp1, the guy next to me (in the mag) tested the SC5 :(

Come on GM, take one for the team!!!!

I've got a Shotmiser and its the 3rd best thing i've ever purchased (After my tour 360's and Titleist 909 D2 driver!!)

I've never had a problem with the accuracy and it keeps my stats for every round. Plus if they don't have a course they say they deliver in max 10 working days and they've never been longer than that when i've bought one.

I know alot of guys on here have Skycaddies but i'd have a look at shotmiser before you decide? Also depends how much you are wanting to spend?!

Good shout as it seems to be the area people are most interested in.

Golf world I think it is have a review on GPS devices this month- I saw it whilst flicking through waiting in a queue at the newsagents. I may well buy the mag and read it even though I am already in the SC 2.5 camp.

I agree GM should do an article- though not with reader testing, this would make it harder to compile a decent reviewing article that compares the services on offer from each given GPS, they should do it like with their normal equipment tests where a few members of the team all try it for a few holes and so does the pro that always takes part. Then they can discuss the pros and cons amongst each other in the bar after the round, having each tried all the offerings :D They could of course then send me a SC 5 when they're done with it ;)

Golf Worlds review is just that - its not a test as such. They don't come out with a best buy.

Might raid the credit card and go and get an SG2.5 tomorrow.....

Anyone use a sureshot 8800??

I have only had an hour with the sonocaddie but first impressions are good.
It was my intention of using it for the whole round today but sadly after the wedding reception, I over indulged, felt like Sh!£ when I got up this morning (just) and didn't feel up to going today.
Hopefully if the weather is ok I will be out t'mora aft, failing that it will be on my day off on Thursday.
it holds 30 courses at a time, stats for 100 rounds and you can edit the course yourself while you're out. Mark lay ups to your fave distances, its colour and NO subscription.

I think if you are in the market for an entry level system then the SC 2.5 is definitely the market leader. If you are looking for something more expensive, I like the look of Sonocaddy and it has some good features (stat recording) but I'm not sure whether they actually have men on the ground doing the initial mapping or whether it is taken via satellitel imaging. If it is the former then it could give SC5 a run. One thing against the Sonocaddie is its shape. My SC5 sits nicely in my pocket and doesn't interfere with my shots whereas the Sono looks a little bulky.

I think an on course review (bit like the slow play piece) would be a good move forward and make an interesting piece. I'm available !!!

Whilst I can see the attraction, considering it myself even, I shall play devils advocate here and say are these devices not taking the "brain" out of golf???

I thought that too initially Jon, and I also felt that they would slow a game down with players having to take time out to read them etc.
But as I say, Murph and Leftie were using them last week-end and it certainly didn't slow either of them down.
I will definitely be getting one....and the first courses I will download will be Whittington Heath, Little Aston & Beau Desert for my trip in May.
Very useful if you find yourself off the fairway and can't see a yardage marker or the flag is hidden from view.
I don't think they are "cheating" as such, because you've still got to hit the shot. No different to yardage markers on fairways or strokesavers in my eyes.
Have to laugh at the yardage markers on the sprinkler heads at East Sussex National. Most of them have the yardages on little brass plates to the centre of the green, but on one hole (I think it's the 5th) one of them reads...."you must be joking!"
;)

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I don't see why these GPS units are allowed but not a unit that measures temparature, gradient or windspeed. Surely they don't add up to as much of a help as a distance device? We all pick a club based on yardage primarily. We take the other factors into consideration but yardage is the number 1. So why are we allowed a GPS but not a thermometer?

I guess its because the yardage is already available via markers or yardage books. Doesn't make sense to me but I'm still going to get one!!

Why oh why do so many bat on about 'measuring on the ground'?
I map all my own courses with Google Earth and I am never more than a couple of feet out and mostly less than that.

We used to guess and now we want inch accuracy - crazy world!

It could be that they have not done a high resolution aerial photo survey of your area yet.

As an example, try putting BR1 3NE into the search location of google earth to see what can be done.

Hi Sam

How do you do that with Google Earth.......when I zoom in it is still to fuzzy to make out the tees!

Am I missing something

Thanks

dandpl

Suspect Leftie is right! I can clearly see, for example, the fringe around the greens in my area.
