Big news today that is getting lost in the political hoo haa. Sky have announced that they are withdrawing from Team Sky cycling. Considering how succesful they have been it is slightly surprising but the change of ownership may have brought this about.

Surely someone will step in to take over, too successful not to.

I'm not sure anyone who may step in will step in with the same size budget, they have the biggest wage bill by more than twice of their nearest competitor that used to be Saxo-Tinkoff.

Perhaps they have taken the project as far as they ant to and see only diminishing returns from now on? They've won the Tour several times now recently and probably were favourites to win it in the next few years. So people might just get a bit bored of it to the extent that the publicity they get from doing it isn't worth the investment. Plus it will always be a tainted sport and there will always be suspicion around their methods. And despite the fact it may signal the end of all the British victories, in a way it could make the sport more open and competitive again if the drug and financial doping is removed.
